    As a dedicated mac user i'd say one of my favourite apps is Adium, all in one IM that supports every protocal I know of! (MSN, AIM, ICQ, even facebook chat!)

    It's fully skinnable/customisable and makes the microsoft messenger for mac look like a joke!

    Cheers buddy. Man MSN sucks on a Mac, although i never did think to look for an alternative.

    don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but if your using adium you can also use 'growl' for notifications. this works for most apps, mail, safari, hardware, and itunes... you have to install a few of them separately though. its great and free..
