    Default Be offers 48mb broadband

But only if you live near the Paddington exchange
Let's be honest, all this high speed broadband means nothing to a good chunk of the UK populace, but if you happen to live in the Paddington exchange area of London, you now have the option of super-high speed broadband from Be.

Yes, a day after Virgin announced 50Mb broadband for half of the UK, Be is offering an almost-as-fast service 48Mb service for an even smaller group of people. Be has doubled its 24Mb service using a 'bonded' connection, making it the fastest ADSL service by a considerable distance.

On the face of it, this might just look like an irrelevant bit of muscle flexing, but it does show you can have high speed broadband down your phone line - and it could mean your home connection receiving a speed injection in the not-too-distant future.

And if a company can offer faster speeds, they just might get the lion's share of the market. According to the latest figures from the Deloitte Digital index, broadband uptake has now slowed to half a per cent after a 6% growth in the past year. Less new customers means tempting in existing business - and that should translate into faster broadband packages without a hike in price.

I'm on Be and think they are great. Only get 15.5meg or so (it fluctates - highest was 18mbps) but as I live in the middle of nowhere I'm happy with that... for now

I'm showing as OK for the 50meg on VM site but since I just dropped them for BE they can feck off, even with the rumoured doubling of the traffic allowance it's a joke. Even if they took the traffic management off I wouldn't trust them to keep it off. Honestly though I don't think I'd actually use that kind of speed.

Do you need 2 BT lines at £11/month each to get this new high speed BE?

Yes, as with all bonded services it uses multiple lines. Easynet used to offer the same service. It works out quite expensive though as the lines have to be built in a certain way at the exchange.

Is it £11 a month? I have no idea how much BT lines cost - I get mine free

To be honest, I think the 21mb line I get at the moment is as fast as I will need for the foreseeable future. Unless the cost was only a little bit more, I will stick with my current Be connection.

True I love the speed at the moment. It amazes me how long things take on other peoples connections. I get a Divx film down in 4-5 mins yet it'll take my brother in law who is on 0.5mb around 3-4 hours in ideal circumstances. The fact that he hasn't got newsgroup access and relies on torrents means it takes him even longer.

But O2 say on their site that their service is up to 20mb. Fuck that, losing 4mb for saving a few quid

To be fair I've never had a problem with Be's call centres or the online ticket service. I logged a ticket online the other day and within minutes I had a text telling me they had responded.

Duh! I know they are both owned by O2 BUT O2 don't do 24 meg and their 20meg is about the same price as my 24 PLUS the service is not tweakable and furthermore it's a 1 year contract etc. etc.

ahh, never noticed the difference as I only get about 16 mb mate
Got to say be were good though I was with them for over a year, they just pissed me off and got a better deal with O2 with the same speeds, it might come back to bite me in the ass if the service turns out to be shite, but up to now it's spot on
