    Xbox 360 the 360 and 1080p

    so got a new sharp 32" tv that does 1080p (have it working 1080p with the western digital hd thingy (which is shit with artefacts running dark knight ) )

    but was unable to get 1080p over component to the tv, thought hrmmm must be because the tv doesnt support 1080p over component, so went and got a vga cable thinking it would accept 1080p through vga but no joy either

    is it more likely the tv only supports 1080p over hdmi

    would the 1080p work with a vga -> hdmi adaptor?

    thanks for any input

    converting VGA to HDMI is only going to lower the picture quality due to VGA being analogue and HDMI being digital.

    Just use HDMI.

    Also, I don't understand what you mean about the Hard drive affecting Dark Knight?!

    i've got a sharp aquos 37" 1080p tv. it supports 1080p over component... but i've never managed to get the xbox to work at 1080p over component. it just comes up wth an awful green screen. i believe it's because the cable that's shipped with the xbox isn't capable of displaying 1080p like most shitty component cables.

    either stick with 1080i or get an xbox with an hdmi port on the back. getting a converter will just introduce lag and may degrade the quality of the picture...

    You need to get yourself a popcornhour !

    If I remember correctly, you can only select 1080p over hdmi, and not over component or vga....reason being some protection shite, HDCP or something like that.

    how have you got it connected? hdmi? does the box support the file format? how does it work with codecs etc? have you got any other 1080p/dts films you can try? does it display standard .avi files pixellated?

    i've got mine running 1080p over component, its one of the pre hdmi models, and i'm using the cable out of the box, maybe its a sharp thing?? mines a panasonic.

    and to echo tronads post above ref the popcorn hour,i've got one, an its the best 180 quid i've spent in a long time, plays eveything i've thrown at it with ease, whereas before i had a htpc that i would be forever messing aorund with trying to get 1080p mkv's playing smoothly, not i just turn on the popcorn and hit play.

    amazing bit of kit, off topic tho sorry

    Whats it like streaming 1080p over wifi ? (I presume you got the one bundled with wifi dongle). I ask that cos I will have problems getting a network cable to it.

    I've just plugged mine back in on component to check and it's still very green and the screen is displayed twice (side by side). I've also checked the manual and it doesn't actually mention anything about displaying 1080p over component... It only talks about supported resolutions in the hdmi section... hmmmmm maybe it doesn't support 1080p over component... that may be why mine has 3x hdmi ports instead.

    impossible over 54mb. there's nowhere near enough bandwidth. especially if the pc you're streaming from is wireless too.

    you might wanna check out something like this, i'm streaming 1080p with them:

    My LG 50" does 1080p over component with the original 360 cable.

    Bought an elite just for HDMI and thought fuck it and try the cable. Worked

    Off track here, but does the 360 work with power over Ethernet?

    1080p over component depends on the HDTV.

    Component = analogue
    HDMI = digital

    The decoding chips for both are usually seperate and they are not forced to support both analogue(component) and digital (HDMI) on the HDTV at 1080p

    HDMI is the prefered choice.

    No. The Xbox cannot be powered by a network cable.

    I was gonna buy an elite the other day just because it's black and would look better in my black glass stand.

    I've just got the normal 20gb white version. It's a new one though so it has HDMI.

    I've also spoke to a mate who says that 1080p isn't supported via component on many brands as there's no way of copy protecting the signal. The xbox may be able to play games but not HDDVD films in 1080p via the component cable.

    If it's part of the 1080p spec that it should not be able to play movies over component cables then it's possible that a lot of manufacturers disable stuff like this on their tvs...

    If any manufacturer was going to disable 1080p over component it would be Sony but mine works with a pre-hdmi 360 over component and a PS3 over hdmi.
    If at first you don't succeed.....redefine success. . . .
