    Help Milk or Water?

Ive read differing opinions on whether its better to make your protein shake with water or milk. I understand that milk contains fat and other things but if you use skimmed milk or fat free milk is that the same as making your shake with water or is it still better to make it with water?

Milk is the devil's drink. It's not designed to be ingested by adult humans. We're the only mammal species that drinks milk past infancy. As we age we don't produce enough of the enzyme lactase to digest lactose (the sugar in milk) and therefore our bodies don't tolerate it very well. You may not associate some of the symptoms with drinking milk, but excess mucus production along with a host of other side effects is usually attributed to drinking milk or other dairy products.

Try an alternative such as rice milk or oat milk. Dairy products such as milk are also acid forming, which is bad for the immune system and human health in general.

i find the protein shake tastes nicer with milk but ive read it takes longer to go through the system than water. my old trainer used to tell me to have my porridge with water too rather than milk. I thought it was due to the fat content which made me think it would be ok to use skimmed milk?

I didn't suggest Soya milk as there is a suggestion that soya does inhibit the absorption of certain nutrients. So, rice or oat milk is a better alternative. Look for unsweetened varieties.

It means exactley that, some nutritionists suggest soya may inhibit the absorption of some minerals because of the phytic acid it contains. However, as with most foods not enough scientific research has been carried out to positively prove or disprove the theory. Some nutritionists claim that once the soya beans are cooked and/or fermented most of the phytic acid is destroyed but again, there doesn't seem to be any real evidence to suggest either way.

As regards links, Google has a plethora of reading on the subject, try searching for soya phytic acid malabsorption

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't drink or eat it, with a varied and balanced diet it shouldn't really have a detrimental effect even if it does inhibit absorption of certain minerals. But I tend to favour rice or oat milk as a result of the uncertainty.

I use water for PWO as the body absorbs it quicker.
I use milk before bedtime as it slows down the absorbtion rate.
