Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
I have the oportunity to swap over a 120 gig drive from my current machine with a SATA 120 gig drive and only pay the difference (about 10 quid)
Has anyone tried SATA drives, i recall the first generation of drives getting lukewarm reviews, mainly because the hardware was basically the same with a SATA interface.
Ive tried lookin for reviews but they all seem to be based on the first gen of SATA drives, cant find any more receint info
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
If the spindle speed of this new drive you are planning on getting is the same as your existing drive, then you will not notice the difference in data throughput (same applies if you are going to use a SATA to PATA convertor to connect it to your system).
If the new drive has a 10K spindle speed and you have a dedicated SATA controller then you will notice a difference.
If you want to see manic performance then buy an U320 SCSI controller, and a U320 SCSI HDD with a 15K spindle speed ;)
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
toms hardware has some stuff on newer SATA drives.

Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
thats what i thought about the speeds, the drive i could get is
Seagate ST3120026AS 120gb 7200rpm Barracuda 7200.7 SATA - OEM £70.65 inc VAT
and the one it would replace is a
Seagate ST3120026A 120gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache Barracuda 7200.7 Plus - OEM £65.23
so it looks lke theyre identical apart from the interface, still mite get it anyway, just for the convienience of the small cables
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
I will have a new computer with serial ata tomorrow so i'll post up my thoughts then but just now i have just normal ide hard disk and an ok setup, lets hope for more speed :woot:
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
for more speed you realistically need the 10,000 rpm HD's
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
Go for it, SATA just plain rules!
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
New pc kicks ass, it took 10 minutes to install windows xp service pack 1. Thats with SATA drives and a 3.2ghz CPU. I'll benchmark it sometime
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
Best to benchmark it now before it gets the clog from windows :)
So did you buy xp or is it same as last pc?
Re: Anyone Used/Experienced Serial ATA?
Wish I had SATA, my old board did. Never mind, i'm quite pleased with my Maxtor 120GB 8MB Cache ATA133 :D
