Re: Community Centre Proxy
I would use Smoothwall mate.
There is a free OpenSource version called Smoothwall Express which I have used before.
We use the Corporate (paid for version) at work, and this adds extra features not available in the Express version.
Re: Community Centre Proxy
If you want to manually block/allow you can use a second hand Draytek router which has filters to block individual websites, keywords, types of traffic or restricting extensions that can be downloaded. DD-WRT has similar functionality too.
Smoothwall sounds interesting, will have t give it a go when I get a sec. I know Overcarl loves Untangle so he may be able to help you there.
Re: Community Centre Proxy
tombott quick question
got 2 VM's
Smoothwall on one with 2 NICs set as bridged with all all traffic
One DHCP to my router
One IP 192.168.100.100
second VM
Win 7
IP static as 192.168.100.1
DG: 192.168.100.100
DNS 192.168.100.100
can ping 192.168.100.100 from win PC
but cannot connect to https://192.168.100.100:441 (web console on smoothwall)
what am i missing???
Thanks
Re: Community Centre Proxy
I give a +1 for smoothwall. I look after three customers that use SmoothWall and it is pretty good. VERY fast and flexible. I've maxed out a gbit interface on one of the servers doing a single download. Compared to BlueCoats which are REALLY expensive the performance is mental and there is a well supported free version and a good community.

Hi,
Still no joy on either port number.
Couple of questions
Currentl LAN car on the smoothwall has no DG and DNS set to router
Windows machine does it need proxy server enabling and what port does it use?
Thanks
Re: Community Centre Proxy

I'm afraid there is a bit of a difference between the commercial and free versions. What sort of things are you looking to do?
Re: Community Centre Proxy
tbh its reporting mainly but the free version looks ok for what we require
Re: Community Centre Proxy
I would advise to do some real life testing once you think you've got it sorted.
I remember setting up a free untangle box then I requested permission from the boss to conduct one test in his presence - just to go to google and type porn then click each of the sites on the first 5 pages to see what happened. The free version blocked most of the big names - youporn, xvideos, etc. but the further we went through google's search results, the more likely we would be to go straight to the site.
My suspicion is these kind of products have a free version to entice poor IT workers who think they can implement a solution with the lack of resources available. Problem is by the time you've done this you find out the free protection is useless. It's ok if you want to reduce the amount of undesireable content being viewed, but totally useless to actually stop undesireable content from being viewed. However due to the partial success, you may have been reporting how you are near a solution.
This is when the IT worker who has been working his arse off goes embarrassed with cap in hand to boss to ask for money for the license to finsh the project off.
Re: Community Centre Proxy
I am working with smooth wall express and as you say have had success but testing is yet to commence I am sure as a deterrent it will be useful
Re: Community Centre Proxy
In my first round of testing 10 pages of google porn has been blocked

I hear what you are saying, but that's not really the way Smoothwall works (as a company).
It started out as free, then the Corporate version came later. The only reason as a company that we went Corporate was for the support of multiple external IP's, other than that the Express (free) version did everything we could ask for.
Re: Community Centre Proxy
Thanks tombot I appreciate your time and information
Re: Community Centre Proxy
The commercial version isn't that expensive to be honest and they are quite flexible. Their support has always been top notch and they are always willing to give free advice on stuff. Much better support than other products I've used in the past. Only thing is they use Teamviewer for remote support which probably isn't an issue for you but was a nightmare for me as my company policy restricts what can be installed and blocks remote access tools to the internet.
