Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
I'm trying to get every ounce of power out of this pc i bought here
http://www.digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=821899
It's for a mate with not much money so he can play games on it, i realise it won't play most newer games, but even if it plays some at lower res he'll be happy.
So i'm after a fast PCI only graphics card if anyone has one please, been looking at this one on Amazon but thought i'd ask here first.
Cheers
EDIT been informed by coolio that the best standard pci card you can get is a Radeon X1300, so if anyone has one :)
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
I believe if you cut the pcie slot you can fit a newer card in, it just will only run at x1 speed.
Edit: Doesn't the ad say it's got a pcie x1 slot?
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
Right that's good to know cheers mate.
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
I thought this machine didn't have a PCI-E slot, just a normal PCI?
I am Confused.com!

Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
just one thing, wont you need a low profile card or can that case take a full size card?
A friend of mine recently got a low profile pci card to try and revive an old machine, thing he paid about £30 for it. If you need a low profile I can ask him if he wants to sell it as the machine had other problems in the end (was a shuttle).

if it has i riser card in it then it should take standard size PCI cards as they lay across the case as the riser card stands upwards.
PCI offers no choice really for GFX cards, if you get a fairly modern one then its mediocre at best, if you use the X1 slot by cutting then obviously your limited to X1 speed and if you find a X1 slot card your going to be shafted for a lot of cash.
things off the top of my head..
Geforce FX 5500
Geforce 6200
ATi Radeon 9250
ATi Radeon X1550 or X1300
infact stick any of those in one slot and if you need more then put an ageia physyx card in the other lot (the ageia cards were PCi so they could be fitted at the same time as any other gfx card)
hope this helps a little.
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
if you could find one of these....
PCI-E x1 Graphics Performance with Galaxy GeForce 7300GT
fook i dont think it would fit in the case in an upright position, gonna leave it here incase anyone else is following the thread looking for
a solution as well.
The Card
Card layout is very standard as you might have expected. We have a copper cooler on the front which is very quiet. We also have 128MB of DDR-3 Samsung memory and our normal bits and pieces plastid along the front.
The biggest stand out feature on the front of the card is of course the little PCI Express connector down the bottom. There is no denying that it is kind of weird to see a graphics card with the connector for the first time.
would be nice to know how this and a normal one in the cut slot would work thought.
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
Chris the shuttle problem wasnt to do with the graphics card in the end. hence the spare card. :)
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
Thanks for everyone's input, i've managed to get hold of a low profile radeon x1300 for 18 quid lol so i'll report back once that's in.
Cheers
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
This radeon x1300 has turned up and it's pci-e ffs even though he advertised it as pci :pissed:
Re: Decent (Fast) PCI (Not PCI-E) graphics card
If it was ebay, get it back to em as it was not sold as advertised.
