Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
I got a 50 meg upgrade from virgin today but am only getting 31meg downloads through my Linksys wrtgl with wrt firmware on it.
Going direct through the modem im getting 45meg speed. I dont think the Linksys can go any faster so it looks like ill have to get a new cable router that supports full 50meg and more importantly Wake on Lan. Anyone using a cable router that is capable of both?
Thanks
Bub
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
Virgin should have given you a dlink 615... this can be easily re-flashed with dd-wrt firmware that will support WOL.
Phone them up and moan like mad... :cool2:

No, don't phone up, the dlink-615 is one of the worst 'n' modems, even with dd-wrt, the wireless performance is utter shit! I know, I've got one :bomb:

Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
I didnt know different routers didnt support WOL, I use an app on my iphone to get everything ready for when I get down stairs on a morning (I tend to get stuck in traffic at the moment due to some council building work closing the roads I normal use so find it easier to reply to sort out the days shedule and to reply to my work email first thing on a morning rather than going into the office early to get it done, and if I turn up late no-ones waiting on me to give them what they need to do their jobs)
I am on ADSL2+ though not cable although i wouldnt have though it would make huge differences but then again I am frequently wrong:sarcastic:
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
Are Virgin still charging an activation and installation fee on this. I wouldnt mind getting this in if it was free installation and activation.
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
I think it is free at the moment.

Installation is free at the moment but activation is £20.
Virgin are sending me a dlink615, so thanks for the tip. In the meantime i re-flashed my Linksys with Tomato firmware this time and im getting max download 45meg. Is anyone actually getting the full 50meg? Also Astraweb (newsgroups) speeds are about 35meg
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
I get the full 50MB and i am going to be upgraded to 100MB this weeks for the pilot trials.... :-)
I use a Belkin NVision which has a speedo on it so you can see how fast it is actually going all the time...!!!!!
Sometimes i have to play with myself just watching that and ignoring the porn on the screen....!
Crash:yes:

100meg, blimey i bet a lot of pcs wont be able to cope with that kind of speed. Is WOL working for you? because my Tomato firmware is hit and miss at the moment
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
I am guessing that you mean Wake on LAN, if so then i have no idea as i have never used it at home, i am bad and just leave it all switched on...!
My systems seem to break when i give them a rest..!:pissed:
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
I had looked into the draytek 2130 for joining other contractor's lans to ours on sites, although they are intended for cable modem applications. Device is rated up to 800Mb, pretty much all other drayteks we are currently using support wol, but I haven't ever used a 2130 so I can't say if it does or whether the device is any good.
Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
Thanks for replies, just an update on download speed. Firstly i disabled my avast antivirus and changed my cat cable from router to modem and download speed shot up to 55meg download, im thinking it was more a dodgy cable. Thats me sorted.

Re: Best cable router for WOL and 50meg
That's good to know.
I get a rock solid 50meg on newsgroups on a wired connection from my dir-615 but the wireless is rubbish. I have though just updated the dd-wrt fimware to build 15279 so we shall see...

It is not supposed to be going live till next week so i have no idea what is happening...!
But i like it.....
Not had chance to test newsgroups yet but i am guessing by the look of it that i will max that out again....
Happy days..!:great:
