Wifi Tracking is it possible?
Hi guys,
I'm looking to setup a wifi hotspot in my flat with my Raspberry Pi to track my PAs when their at work. As social is culling my hours again I need to know when carers actually arrive at mine.
I was going to create a Wifi hotspot with the aim of tracking the PAs location through an open Wifi (at the start to test) is this at all possible?
I read that I can use WPS to do this but cannot find out how I can do this.
Anyone know how?
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
You wouldn't be able to force their phones to connect to the AP in the first place though?
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
What happened to the good old clock in/clock out system?
These can vary from a signature on a card to fingerprint verification by a special device which records entries in a database.
If you are planning to do this covertly, there probably will be data protection issues. Also lets say a carer arrived half an hour early so caught up with facebook/email on their mobile before the appointment time, then after you appointment they sat in their car for half an hour calling friends/family to make plans for the evening, your system could end up shafting you by an hour.
What happens if a carer changes mobile phone, forgets to take it to work or leaves it in the car?
Shame about these snags because otherwise I think it could have been quite an interesting project.
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
I have a semi covert WiFi cam (I striped an eBay one and put it in a clock hung on the wall ) and it faces the inside of the front door. Captures every coming and going and door step interaction.
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
Google "raspberry pi wifi tracking" loads out there

Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
I thought of a simpler method. Instead of tracking location (need 3x Pi's) could I not just track Wifi access? I could run a script to log all connected devices with their mac addresses, time etc. Then I could build a profile based upon that information?

Any ideas?

Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
Just run an open AP on a Linux box and log connection traffic, but that depends on the device. Some devices will require the user to connect. Mmmmmmm
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
So their Mac addresses will show who's who but you need to find out which phones that relates to.
Cant you just install a key swipe system, much easier (well will show entry)

Hit a brick wall, ideas?

Configuring the wireless interface << i'm currently stuck on this at the moment mate, i can't work out how to access/edit this file. Any ideas?
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
Webcam? Unless there's something going on and then hires webcam ;-).
They they might have wifi turned off, an old phone without it (I know someone who still uses one), they might not have auto join wifi, I think even with wps you have to agree/press a button on the other machine (phone) anyway.
Do do they just normally come into your flat or are they in and out as you could put a sensor on the door to log times.
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
Hi BS,
What I've done at the moment is created an open hotspot using Pi-Point. Do you know a way that I can get the Pi to create a log of user access?
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
I've moved it into my lounge (headless) I tried logging in via Putty but it throws back:
Network Error: Connection Refused.
Any ideas?
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
I've got my phone set to not connect to networks it doesn't know - are you sure they will try connect?
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
They all pretty much use my WiFi anyway. I think I might just use an RFID door lock or swipe card. I should be able to create a log shouldn't I??

Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
Yeah all the rfid stuff logs the card number - easy to see who's been in. Or as I said before a webcam, if anyone is going to dispute date/time they can do it for an rfid reader of as a webcam - webcam has added security bonuses too.
Re: Wifi Tracking is it possible?
I'll do both mate as I need CCTV to stop theft :)
