Oh dear I seem to have done it now
I have recently bought a Rover 414 P reg with 74000 on clock.I have been advertizing on the decode page as the radio has been disonnected ,alas,to no avail.....Now beleive it or not the cam belts just snapped,I think,....I was driving along when I heard a loud twang and "flap, flap, flap, engine stalled and died,Was that my cam belt?and if it is how much is this going to cost me.worst and best scenario please xxJuliette:upset:
Re: Oh dear I seem to have done it now
O dear indeed, you've got the Rover K series engine in there, if it is the cam belt gone 95% chance it's bent some valves. Also the aluminium heads on those engines corrode quite badly so you may have a nasty surprise when they get it off.
Price? Impossible to say until it's stripped down but anywhere from £300 - £1000.
If the heads not corroded then you should be OK.
Let us know what your mechanic says & then we can advise you some more.

Re: Oh dear I seem to have done it now
for the price you may have to pay to get it fixed you could go to the auctions & pick one up for the same money. loads of rovers about, trade just dont want them at trade money.
sorry to hear about the trouble though .
Re: Oh dear I seem to have done it now
I looked at the auctions and the prices are silly.A tatty,no history, round the clock.same model realized £2,100.How crazy is that?? Thanks anyway Juliette xx
Re: Oh dear I seem to have done it now
juliette, what auction was that ?? i'll send my cars there !!
ok , example, saw a p reg 97 414 i with 86k on clock go through today, not the best example you'll find but reasonable., no bids first time through but acheived the sum of £750 when through second hall.
i cover auctions from south up to rotherham and we just never seem to sell these rovers well. could be regional but best sales to go to are during the day fleet finance& leasing sales where cars like these are not really wanted by the trade that buys at these sales. was that price acheived at an evening sale ??
Re: Oh dear I seem to have done it now
Yep it woz.A local small company,Perhaps I'll look again at a bigger daytime sale. TTFN.Juliette xx
Re: Oh dear I seem to have done it now
Have you even checked the cam belt is indeed the problem yet?

:thumbs :thumbs :thumbs Thanks for support everyone, hubby has come through. The whole job came to £250.That includes 16 new valves and valve guides, most of them had been snapped or bent. The car is now back together and running:)
Needed a bit of outside help to fit valve guides, but everything else was "slowly, slowing, catchy monkey".along with a now very grubby Haynes manual, and plenty "cups 'o' tea". Bye for now Juiette xx
PS still need a code for the philips radio, if anyone could offer advise it would be much appreciated xx :)

:thumbs :thumbs :thumbs Thanks everybody for your support, hubby has managed to pull through.car is now up and running.yippeee.The whole job came to £250 or there abouts.Needed a bit of proffessional outside help fitting new valve guides but most everything else went quite smoothly.we are now the proud owners of a rebuilt head and a VERY grubby Haynes manual. It took a while but "slowly, slowly catchy monkey" and lots of "cups'o'tea" did the trick. Thanks again folks
