adding security to a program in visual basic
I have code to put serial key/machine key security checks into all my software in visual basic but I wanted to ask if it would be worth it.
I know cracking software is relatively easy these days but it would only stop people sharing between family, is it really worth doing do you think?
Re: adding security to a program in visual basic
I have fa experience as a sw dev so please excuse me if I am talking out of my backside.
However here are my thoughts:
If it is a fairly trivial excercise to add such protection, you would be daft not to.
However, depending on how expensive and desirable your sw is, people may be determined to crack it.
Just for example, I ended up figuring out how to edit service tags in PC BIOS, and how to change mac addresses in the NIC's eeprom, then creating a custom BIOS to change the motherboard hardware ID to succesfully complete a certain experiment.
However, I doubt most fuckers would go to such lengths.

Usually it'll be a hash of some piece of hardware that's unlikely to change so serial number of motherboard cru etc
