HDD’s Is there really that much difference?
I’m looking for more storage and the wd reds are my ideal drive of choice for the server but do they really differ that much from regular drives?
I can buy a 5tb Samsung drive for half the price of a 4tb wd red drive.
so is there any major gains in using nas drives?

They tend to be tested more thoroughly and come with more warranty usually at the expense of disk speed (most NAS drives are 5400rpm). Personally I always buy the NAS drives for those devices.
