Any Surface Pro users here ?
Well, I'm a long term Apple user and by and large I've been happy with my apple laptops and iPads etc, and I picked up an iPad pro not long after launch and absolutely loved it. So much in fact that with a logitech keyboard case, I have been doing probably 90% of my computing on it.
And there's the bomb. 90%, not 100%. I still had to get the laptop out for some things that iOS wouldn't do. A desktop class processor and screen and keyboard but not a desktop OS and it's bugged me since I thought of it. The microsoft surface has interested me for the exact same reason. As much as I dislike windows, a proper desktop OS in a tablet, with proper connectivity seemed to tick all the boxes.
So, today I bit the bullet and picked up a Surface pro 4 with a view to it replacing my iPad pro AND my Macbook. I have no idea if it will succeed but I had to give it a go.
This is unless Apple release a touch screen MacBook, but I think that may be a way off...
cheers,
malty

There are a few of them at work now. Loads of pro3s but the pro 4s seem to have a fair more issues , but the guys who have them love them. They are all .net developers and work on a lot of VMS and only use these (they have the i7 16gb mind)

I have the girl's one. the intel m 128GB/4GB model. I almost went for a surface 3 mind you which is atom based but the store I was in had none in stock.
I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised how spritely it all seems (so far).
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
They are beautiful things, I know one guy uses it a lot to play his XBOne on when the misses is watching tele

ooh I'm going to have to try that :)
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
Anyone I know with them rates them very highly, I set them up and also liked them. Perhaps I will migrate to one eventually but I just got myself a T460s so won't be for years yet!
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
As a person that's got bits and pieces of everything. You might find a niggle with the surface that restricts a few % of your overall usage.
I just don't think there is one device that does all that someone wants.
Thats my justification for buying new shit anyway!

Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
My dad has a surface pro 3 and absolutely loves it. Mostly uses it in tablet mode, but it's easy to swap into win 10. He is getting on a bit and his only issue is some of the pop ups appear quite small (Sunday afternoon he was trying to sign into Gmail for ages and his finger/pen kept pressing trouble signing in instead of proceed).
On the whole he loves it and is already thinking about getting whatever newest surface that is out when he needs upgrade.

I have found that the resolution of the touch points isn't as good as on my iPad. For example I hit the forgotten password link twice when logging in here.

I will mention this to my dad tomorrow, sure it will make him feel much better :)
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
Haven't used windows in years, what's the best email client ? Hoping for something with a unified inbox for multiple accounts.
I guess I'm saying I want something like mac mail. The last win email client i used other than outlook was thunderbird.
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
Mailbird or Thunderbird.
I've be aching to buy a Surface Pro 4 but I just can't justify the money right now. That said, they're probably the best all-in-one solution available and really do make the iPad look like a kid's toy.

I set up Thunderbird last night but can you get a single inbox view for all accounts at once rather than having to click between them ? Also can you have it checking and notifying mail without it running per-se ?

The thing is, my iPad was £630 and the case £100. My MacBook was £1049 making a total of £1800
Surface Pro seems to do everything both of those can and the model I bought was £669 plus the cover was £110 making £780 total.
My MacBook should be worth £700 and my iPad £500 minimum recouping £1200 putting at least £400 back in my pocket, which would seem like a no-brainer. IF (and it is an if) I can live with windows.
So far so good, One of my biggest worries was the type cover. I thought the keys would be horrible, but it is so close to the MacBook keyboard in feel, travel etc it's unreal.
I had to do a ton of updates yesterday, one to stop a sleep/wake issue (which I have already had happen).
I'm still a little concerned about wake-up time, it seems to take a bit longer than I would like (I'm coming from an iPad remember which is one click and on, and I am looking forward to finding out about battery life, especially when the machine is just closed and not shut down. I never ever shut down my iPad and MacBook and they both barely use any battery when asleep. If the Surface Pro can do any of that then I'll be delighted.
Many thanks,
malty
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
My wife got a surface pro 3 with the i5 and got the pro 4 type cover.
I love it, does everything I can think of. She doesn't use her ipad anymore.

Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
I have the S4 i5 model since November and love it- Yeah it had sleep issues. But for me they were completely resolved with the last firmware updates. Wake from sleep does not seem as instantaneous as iPad. But its not much longer, I think its mainly because I expect it to wake when the cover is opened (It doesn't).
For mail, I'm afraid I still use the default Windows Mail app - You can combine inboxes on this mail client as well. (settings, Manage Accounts and Link Inboxes). I use this as it is more touch friendly.
Also re the touch issues - have you tried running the touch / pen re-calibration yet?
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
On Windows you should find Outlook is the most powerful client, there should be ways to set up a unified inbox but I prefer to keep mine separate.

I set up some accounts in he default app and it seemed OK but lacking in something.
I'm not really having touch issues it just doesn't seem as precise as my iPad
I have managed to unify my inboxes now (it creates local unified folders) in thunderbird, so I'll see how I get on with that. I wish it would still check for mail when you close it though, I can't find an option for that.
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
I am a little out of date with my surface pro I am still using a surface pro 2 the 128GB/4GB version with the touch cover and it does everything I need it to. I actually prefer the smaller size screen and its ratio I prefer for watching films. I mainly use it for lightroom, I have the touch mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard for it that I use when I have it hooked up to a monitor. I thought I lost it on 2 occasions when the baby knocked a drink over on it but a day of drying out it came back to life. both times.
I would buy another. Everything else just seems limited, even the RT versions,, I bought my Dad a dell windows tab and it does most things but has limits.
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
I've had a surface pro 3 for about a year. I did worry when I ordered it as to whether it would get used enough to justify the price tag but I hardly ever use my desktop now. As someone has said it works well for streaming from the xbox one as well .
If you want a mouse then you can pick up a Microsoft wedge touch mouse pretty cheap now which compliments the surface pro nicely.
Re: Any Surface Pro users here ?
Another vote for Outlook. Personally have nothing but problems with Thunderbird.
