It can be done on the phone (no PC required) via CWM

Re: Help -Rooting an S2
I beleive this is the link I used (it was a while ago) need a PC to put files on the microSD,

This is how you reboot to recovery
Step 1: Power down the device. Pulling the battery will work as well, especially if you are caught in a boot loop.
Step 2: Allow the device to completely shut down. Waiting until your screen is off, or just giving it a full minute or two should suffice.
Step 3: For the Galaxy S2 you will need to hold Volume Up and Power at the same time until you see the Samsung logo appear. Then release

Re: Help -Rooting an S2
So:
Rooting
- Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- MOD EDIT: Links removed as its the unsafe version...
or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip - Reboot to recovery.
- Choose apply update from external storage.
- Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
- Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
- Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
- Reboot
- You are done and now your device is Rooted
So I downloaded recovery clockwork (http://download2.clockworkmod.com/re...5-galaxys2.zip) and SU Busybox installer placed both zips on the sd card. That right?
edit: the CWM could be read from the Sd fine, but the busybox needed to be on a folder on the phone, could not browse to it on the SD
I now have superuser on in the Apps so assuming it all worked!
Thanks Koola!
Now to find an unlocking app!
