Default Ed Sheeran and the charts - are they still valid?

I'll preface this with the statement that I'm not big into the charts but they do kind of show the musical trends of the nation as a whole. When Eminem first appeared in the charts opened the UK public to mainstream rap for example.

However times change and last week Ed Sheeran secured NINE of the top ten singles entries. That's just insane! Now I know the charts count streams as well (150 streams = 1 purchase) but surely they should adapt again after this. I've seen a few suggestions around ie. Only one purchase per user is counted so streaming 300 times by one user will only count as 1 purchase but in all honesty who is going to listen to the same track 150 times in a week?!

The problem is that technology and the way we are listening to music is changing faster than the industry which is still stuck in the stone ages. Maybe the charts should be based on how much an artist has earned from a track - therefore purchases would be more prioritized than say Spotify which only give tiny amounts of money to the artists per stream.

What do you guys think? Are they charts neeeded anymore? Surely trending in apps such as Spotify are a better system.

    I agree with you both.

The charts should be only based on sales and streamed songs should not be a part of it.

I am so sick of hearing about Sheeran. He is absolutely everywhere!

I like pop music and listening to the radio, but it's a real problem these days because of the likes of Sheeran, John Legend and Sam Smith - they all sound exactly the same, with a really annoying kind of whiny voice and whiny lyrics.

Absolutely spot on, charts based on sales, digital and physical, not streaming.

Ed is incredibly talented song writer, producer and singer, whether you're into his music or not.

Writing songs for those he has, whilst been successful in his own right, at his age is incredible.

It's too easy for the artists to go gold etc now too, if it was on single sales alone he'd never have all them places in the top 10

Is he though, is music in such a state that he's as good as it gets ?

You only have to look at the festivals to see what state music is in, nearly everyone single one has bands from the nineties or the old school performers.

I'm just sick of what they call "R&B" being forced onto everyone everywhere.

The shite that Rihanna, Beyoncé, Drake and cunts like that churn out all sounds the same.. They all just sound like they are attempting to make love to the fucking microphone.

Can't even find a decent radio station anymore.

totally irrelevant these days, do kids really care if their favorite artist is in the top 10 anymore? I remember giving a shit about that for a few years in my teenage days, but it didnt take long before I realised the charts are full of shite, or just full of tracks I didn't like.

The current chart, which I presume is based on weekly sales, stream plays and downloads, seems even more pointless. It's kinds cool that older tracks can chart again, and can even be purchased individually, but if it results in the current chart, they need to review the way popularity is measured for it to stay relevant.

Fuck, we all sound like our parents did when we were growing up. Having said that, music is shit now. I often have to endure Capital when I take the kids anywhere in the car and they play the same 10 songs all day. It's always someone & someone else feat. Sean Paul, who is fucking shit. I can't understand a word the mumbling prick spouts.

I find Radio 6 the only channel that plays music I like. Used to be radio 1, but the music and Dj's are shit on there now

    I believe so.

Think now a days, you have a lot more music being produced and released now I believe, you have more media platforms to share that music (not just the radio and top of the pops).

We have more music artists, selling more copies than ever before. We've made buying music from a plethora of artists much more accessible via smart phones and the internet. Take away from how you rate music artists, with more artists selling more music than ever before, that tells you there is a demand, and demand comes from a consumer.

We've all bought naff records over the years, but now you're able to strip that down to singles. So if a wide variety of people are buying a wide range of singles, that tells you that that music is "good" to them.

Problem is, we're just getting older and cantankerous, and music doesn't sound the same to us. Music to today's kids, is how we took to music when we were their age.

I disagree to a point sheeran has a very big youth following but yes he is very much like Adel one of our great talents of our music at this time .

But something has to be done with the chart system again

Don't even get me started... I've never liked mainstream music.

Given the option I would never listen to legal radio anymore. The only time regular radio is on in my car is because the missus is yet to fall asleep. The music I listen to helps to drown out all the banging noises from the boot...

Fkin Ed Sheeran, Adele, Rhinoanna... all moulded puppets that have had their shred of talent exploited to the max.

Charts should be based on vinyl 12" singles only. As for it "costing" too much, well tough shit. Artists are paid the much money, they can fkin afford to support the wider industry and give their "fans" actually something to hold for their money instead of some words and a picture on playlist.

Charts now are practically made up of the swipe right and thumb up fkin facebook generation.

Not just the music, society is all wrong now. Never heard my folks say that.

Right lets all embarrass ourselves. What did you lot grow up on ?

I will admit to being a massive of fan 15 - 20 years ago of Faith No More, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Prodigy, Rage Against The Machine & The KLF
To boot I will also admit and probably edit out shortly after that my first ever Single 45 vinyl was.....

    Spoiler:
    La Bamba by Los Lobos.

fuck ed sheeran and the horse he rode in on!
also fuck the charts - music never got better after Pink Floyd
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.
