there should be vpn settings on that superhub router, I have them on the hub6 but never played with them as it runs very fast and as pigzy says its best to have a powerful PC that can handle the encryption

Just ran a test with it switched off and average was 220Mbps (first and only), switched the VPN back on and have been switching between servers and trying a couple of different setting (TCP and UDP protocols, built in AV on/off, swapping servers), and the best I can get is 35Mbps with the average been nearer to 20Mbps.

I am just running it through the PC rather than router as advised (that said, I'm unsure I know the difference as I see no option to run it through the router).

In use it just feels like a backwards step of 10 years in online usability.

Do you just switch it on/off when downloading rather than leaving it on all the time?

Is it me (with having never used one before) that is expecting too much from this VPN lark, but I just don't seem to be getting on with it?

THANKS for a the previous advice

That speed is shite and should be much better via PC. You would expect that speed at router level NOT PC. Try a free trial on another to see if it is down to the VPN or configuration.
BolehVPN do a weeks free trial .

I've ran the Diagnostic from the NordVPN utilities and sent the results off. Not much else I can try as I seem to have exhausted Google results options.

The Superhub does seem to get slated big time with regards to VPN.

I registered for that free trial on Boleh, and the download speed was a measley 5 Mbps.

(a later test rose to 25mbps, but it would seem there is something else amiss - my money is on the Superhub)

    Superhub shouldn't affect a VPN.
The other thing I find with VPN's is try connecting to a different region/server.
I often find that even though I am in the UK I can get 5x speed increase by connecting to France or any other country for that. Maybe the London servers have too much traffic etc

    found this on google

VPN Does Not Connect When Using Virgin Media SuperHubWhen setting up a VPN, you can run into quite a few problems like what authentication it needs, which password do you use. If you are using a Virgin Media SuperHub you have the added challenge that by default your speedy SuperHub will block outgoing VPN traffic meaning that with all the correct details it just doesn't work. To fix this, just follow the below steps:

    • Browse to your SuperHub's IP Address (e.g. 192.168.0.1) and log in
    • Select "Advanced Settings" and click "Yes" to confirm you want to view these
    • Select "Firewall" from the list
    • Tick "IPSec Pass-Through", "PPTP Pass-Through" and "Multicast Pass-Through" at the bottom of the page
    • Click "Yes" to confirm settings change
    • Try to connect your VPN again.

This allows the traffic through for VPN authentication and should now allow your VPN to connect as normal.

well if it goes as bad as that when you have tried 2 different VPNs I can only think that's its still something hardware side of things.
Are Virgin media stopping you from using a vpn or rather restricting I don't know. all I know is its ultra fast with a BT hub6 and the internet I have here

when you ticked the 3 settings on the firewall thingy, did you save it then log out of the settings. Ive just read on a google find that after he did this it did not work, but worked once he turned of his router for a few minutes then turned it back on worth a try

You may also need to access your Virgin Media account and disable Virus safe option in the Websafe option before connecting to the VPN.

To see if Mickey is right and Virgin's hardware is pissing you about do you have a spare router.

e.g. Is it possible to use your virgin router as Modem ONLY, piggy back another router to handle NAT, wifi etc

    Hi,

i don't have a spare router, but thought I could test it in Modem Only mode with just my main ethernet PC as this is something I was going to try.

Yes Mickey, I saved, rebooted (even disconnected the bloody cable in just in case) - closed all browsing etc. I definitely think it's down to the Superhub (I pre-empted the issue hence why I mentioned the Superhub in my initial post).

.....and piggzy, my PC is an all singing all dancing 486 DX2-66

    Thanks to tips

Shame Ofcom/Oftel dont unbundle cables network and allow LLU reselling like they forced BT to do.

They basically replaced one monopoly with another. BT are fast catching up though. With the newly released 314MB download speeds if this is available in your area you could bin Virmin off and pick between about 40 different ISP's

Its possible but I would think unlikely. Worth turning it off and seeing if there is any difference.
Firewalls usually allow or don't. They typically don't restrict speeds.
