Default Old Steel Water Pipes - Removal/Terminate

    Hi

We used to have a boiler upstairs in an airing cupboard but this wi ripped out years ago and we got a combi in the kitchen.

The airing cupboard has been used for very little since however now I want to knock in from the bathroom and turn it into a shower room.

The problem is the old galvanized steel pipes are all in there still (some with cold feeds still active but terminated).

I remember the plumber saying these are bastards as if you start untwisting them usually they undo at joint you didnt want it to unscrew at (as usually rusted together).

So I guess I want to cut these pipes off at floor level and terminate them so can put shower tray over them. If i cut them with hack-saw how do I terminate them so they wont leak? As I guess I am going to have to thread the pipe and them screw cap on without potentially messing with connections further down the pipe?

Can you not use traditional copper compression end cap?

Looks like threaded black iron. If you isolate the system can unscrew and then screw in a male coupling with a end cap?

Not trying to hijack your thread akimba but in our house I notice that I need to run the cold taps for minutes in the morning otherwise cold water is cloudy as fuck,
your post has made me wonder if I might have old pipes like this in situ and you gotta flush em everyday to get good pure / clean water ?!?!?! Leave em overnight and cloudy water again.. hmmm

    It's on the list

Yeah Ash they old pipes like that but
a, if unscrew they usually unscrew at a turn joint which is prob behind some plasterboard somewhere.
b, there are not any visible joints at floor level to try and unscrew too, would have to rip up the floor etc.

I just want to cut them off an inch above the floor and can so I can put the shower tray over them.

Pigz, We dont have an issue with cloudy water like that but does sound like these kind of pipes which is why they were replaced with copper being the pipe of choice ;-)

    Thanks to akimba
