    Default BBQ recommendations?

The time hasn’t come for me to pick up a new BBQ, I don’t have a big budget at the moment but have seen some well priced models at B&Q etc. but wanted to make sure it was at least half decent. I know charcoal would taste better but didn’t know about duel fuel so it’s reliable with gas but still adds some taste from charcoal?

Any advice on what to look for or any specific models would be great, would be good to sort it this week in time for the weekend.

    Cheers!

    Hi mate
I got the B&Q Ultar bbq and it’s done me well.

Yes it’s gas but has a massive cooking area and it’s always done me good

Nice big Webber or similar kettle BBQ would be my recommendation.
A decent sized one will allow you to play about with offset cooking and smoking if that's something you'd like to try.
I'm not a fan of gas but each to their own. Get a chimney starter and decent lumpwood or briquettes and it's fuss free.
I've got a Webber kettle and a pro q smoker as my BBQ tools. If you want to know anything just ask, I'll try to help with my limited knowledge.

Have to agree. Gas = Hob with griddle marks to me.
    Charcoal all the way.
I built my own using one of those kits and a loads of bricks from the local builders yard.

Genuinely don't see the point on a has BBQ. Just cook it inside.

The BBQ experience is the building it, lighting it and cooking with hot coals.

I've got one of those drum ones. Love it. Going to have a go at making a brick one soon..

Try cooking on gas it's not the same as using a grill. The gas heats the lava rock, the fats fall onto the rock and burn. It's really much different to how it appears. Plus it's a piece of piss to get going. The grilles are still bastards to clean though.

Yeah I had one for a year with the lava rocks and all that but I found you got about 10% of the flavor that you get with actual charcoal.

    Just my 2p.

I read a few articles on google earlier that seemed to suggest gas/charcoal didn't really change the flavour (surprised me). I just thought charcoal may be a bit of fuss and take longer to heat up than gas but am in two minds still...

It does take longer to heat up. A lot sometimes. For me it is worth it as the flavor is far, far better.
I used gas and switched back very quickly.
    Is gas easier? Of course... it's a hob/grill ;-)

How long before you're ready to cook using the chimney starter?

But a hob/grill where the fat is dripping and burning creating smoke so not quite the same. For pure convenience then gas all the way, if you've got the time to plan then a proper one.

I still want to make an oil drum smoker but time gets in the way

    15 mins or so.

I bought a Webber starter, really easy. Fill it up, stich a firelighter underneath and 15 mins later, tip if out and you're ready to go.

Although as I've learnt over the years, it's all about good quality charcoal, resturant grade lumpwood if you can.

I ended up buying a drum one, £25 it was second hand, quick wire brush down and it was grand.

I'm no closer to making a decision here. Even though I read articles to the contrary, I do agree that solid fuel should offer a better, more authentic taste but balancing that with time and waste I am edging towards a gas for now as time/convenience is key for me at the moment.

If I were to go down the solid fuel route then this takes my fancy and seems well priced, not found any gas models that seem particularly well priced:

Have you had a look in The Range? They had some decent ones in although I'm not sure how well they were priced.

If you get a gas one, you get convenience but at the end of the day its the equivalent of a outdoor gas oven. You'll get the char but you can do that in the kitchen. If you get the charcoal equivalent, the taste is completely different (the charcoal flavor comes to play..A good way to tell the difference is to make tandoori chicken on both)

OR if you are going all out get a smoker and then play with different wood chips to adjust the flavor

Regarding brands, over here you buy a Weber unless you want a smoker (Weber's don't rust, they hold the temperature really well and will last for a good 15 years+). For that your better off with a Big Green Egg.

I made one last year and to be fair, I rarely use it but when you do the food is awesome.

For a good guide Google the popular mechanics build of one

I spent years looking for the holly grail of BBQ'ness. DIY Vertical/Horizontal oil drums, cheap B&Q crap, cheap Weber clones, cheap nasty gas ones... I finally coughed up for a ProQ Excel 20 smoker about 6 years ago and haven't looked back. I understand that large stackable smokers are not for everyone, so my advise is to buy a charcoal Weber. Buy as big a Weber as you can afford as this gives you options to 'smoke' stuff instead of grilling. Weber kit lasts and you can get replacement parts for them. If funds are tight then look for a 57cm Weber with the built in ash catcher on the second hand market in the usual places.

By the way, the holly grail is the Big Green Egg!

I went and ordered that BBQ from Amazon Evil.

Currently have an Outback gas which is ok but just a bit "meh".

Should have paid for delivery rather than being a tight arse - not due to arrive until Tuesday !! Friggin' rooky.
