World Cup 2018: England beat Colombia on penalties

England's new generation ended the World Cup penalty jinx by knocking out Colombia on spot kicks to reach the quarter-finals.
Eric Dier scored the winning kick after Jordan Pickford's brilliant save from Carlos Bacca's attempt, with England's first ever World Cup shootout win setting up a meeting with Sweden in Samara on Saturday.
Gareth Southgate's side had been seconds away from the last eight during normal time, with Harry Kane's penalty after he was fouled by Carlos Sanchez in the box - his sixth goal of the tournament - looking as though it was going to send them through.


But deep into injury time, Colombia threw everyone forward for a Juan Cuadrado corner, including goalkeeper David Ospina, and Yerry Mina headed a dramatic equaliser at the Spartak Stadium.
Kieran Trippier was standing on the line but could not keep out the Barcelona centre-back's third headed goal of the World Cup.
The Three Lions had been on top for most of the 90 minutes but appeared understandably deflated in extra time - although Danny Rose and Dier missed late chances to win the game and avoid a shootout.
Henderson had a penalty saved by Ospina in the shootout but Mateus Uribe smashed the following kick onto the crossbar to pave the way for Pickford and Dier to be England heroes.
No previous world champions stand between England and the final. The winners of their quarter-final will face either Croatia or hosts Russia for a place in Moscow on 15 July.
The game itself had been a bad-tempered affair, with eight players booked in total - six Colombians, including Wilmar Barrios, who was lucky to avoid red for a first-half headbutt on Henderson.

Thought they played well at the start and much of the game was controlled from then on in.

Surprised how tired they looked from about 70 minutes given they were rested. Delli alle had little impact and didn't seem fully fit, should have been subbed sooner.

Think the team will learn and gain confidence from that game and will probably beat Sweden more comfortably

Playing against Sweden will be a proper game of football and not this constant fouling the Columbia players seemed content on, always thought it would be a dirty match but it was worse than I feared, teams know if England actually play their proper game they can hurt you which is why the fouls play a constant part. as said above England played well to start with but Columbia's constant fouling upset the rhythm.

When sterling went off the game broke down, he's the one providing the link between midfield and attack, no one else is doing that
he won't score the goals for England he does for city as the style is massively different and he can't take up the same positions.
Personally I think Alli should be out for loftus cheek, he is so overrated he plays as a second striker at spurs not in midfield and playing in midfield is showing how lacking he really is.
Also rashford is so far off being ready he's only there for his pace to bring on towards then end of a game.

England created nothing from open play. We're heavily reliant on set pieces for our goals and Sweden are very well organised. Can see it going to penalties again. Having said that, I've been impressed by Southgate. He's got a good spirit among the players.

I agree to some extent that ANYONE other than Sterling should be making those runs, he's just been awful, can't finish, no final product, but does get into the right areas, I think RLC would really play well there, he';s shown good promise.

Im not saying you are one but it really amazes me when England fans point out class players and say they are "shit" shouldn't get a game ect ect....I have heard it about Shearer, Beckham, Liniker ect ect.....laughable really. Bet a few of the beckham boo boys would have loved him taking a couple of those free kicks in front of goal last night in normal time lol.

I'm making no reference to anyone else calling out great players of our past, I don't see how that's relevant to my point Sterling has been poor in this WC, he's making the runs, but there is no fluidity in his passing nor a final product.

Your point about having great players around him is moot, as this doesn't stop him being able to make a pass, or have a decent final product for his runs.

I must admit, I cannot make the correlation between Shearer and Sterling, at all.
