BBC News World Cup 2018: England beat Colombia on penalties

England's new generation ended the World Cup penalty jinx by knocking out Colombia on spot kicks to reach the quarter-finals.
Eric Dier scored the winning kick after Jordan Pickford's brilliant save from Carlos Bacca's attempt, with England's first ever World Cup shootout win setting up a meeting with Sweden in Samara on Saturday.
Gareth Southgate's side had been seconds away from the last eight during normal time, with Harry Kane's penalty after he was fouled by Carlos Sanchez in the box - his sixth goal of the tournament - looking as though it was going to send them through.

But deep into injury time, Colombia threw everyone forward for a Juan Cuadrado corner, including goalkeeper David Ospina, and Yerry Mina headed a dramatic equaliser at the Spartak Stadium.
Kieran Trippier was standing on the line but could not keep out the Barcelona centre-back's third headed goal of the World Cup.
The Three Lions had been on top for most of the 90 minutes but appeared understandably deflated in extra time - although Danny Rose and Dier missed late chances to win the game and avoid a shootout.
Henderson had a penalty saved by Ospina in the shootout but Mateus Uribe smashed the following kick onto the crossbar to pave the way for Pickford and Dier to be England heroes.
No previous world champions stand between England and the final. The winners of their quarter-final will face either Croatia or hosts Russia for a place in Moscow on 15 July.
The game itself had been a bad-tempered affair, with eight players booked in total - six Colombians, including Wilmar Barrios, who was lucky to avoid red for a first-half headbutt on Henderson.

    Full report to follow.

We can live in hope. Would be nice of course but tbh on tonight's performance it will be a stretch.

Thought they played well at the start and much of the game was controlled from then on in.

Surprised how tired they looked from about 70 minutes given they were rested. Delli alle had little impact and didn't seem fully fit, should have been subbed sooner.

Think the team will learn and gain confidence from that game and will probably beat Sweden more comfortably

Crikey that was a bit heart-stopping!

Glad that England won - Columbia's tactics and attitude were disgraceful.

Playing against Sweden will be a proper game of football and not this constant fouling the Columbia players seemed content on, always thought it would be a dirty match but it was worse than I feared, teams know if England actually play their proper game they can hurt you which is why the fouls play a constant part. as said above England played well to start with but Columbia's constant fouling upset the rhythm.

I think we still played with 10 men Stirling has done nothing in the games hes played , give Rashford a chance with Kane just my opinion .

England created nothing from open play. We're heavily reliant on set pieces for our goals and Sweden are very well organised. Can see it going to penalties again. Having said that, I've been impressed by Southgate. He's got a good spirit among the players.

When sterling went off the game broke down, he's the one providing the link between midfield and attack, no one else is doing that
he won't score the goals for England he does for city as the style is massively different and he can't take up the same positions.
Personally I think Alli should be out for loftus cheek, he is so overrated he plays as a second striker at spurs not in midfield and playing in midfield is showing how lacking he really is.
Also rashford is so far off being ready he's only there for his pace to bring on towards then end of a game.

Maybe then we could move Alli further forward because he too can make similar runs instead of Stirling and then that leaves a space for Loftus cheek to play .

Happy days staves off the mindless mini-riot that will happen in my city if they don't win...........Which violent city am I talking about....Canterbury lol. I guarantee if England go out of the tournament there will be broken windows damaged cars and street furniture with bins all over the ship. I don't know what it's like in the towns and cities you guys live in but EVERY major tournament that England have ever qualified in the 20 odd years I have been in Canterbury has ended in some form of the above. BTW I being a surly jock.......support England and also can't handle the bloody pens lol.

Fortunately in my town the extent would be some flower pots getting nicked or maybe at a push a joy ride in a mobility scooter.

It's clear that Ali is not fit, and hasn't been. Should have been taken off in the FH.

England looked like they lacked depth of squad, and individual brilliance, every attempt seemed like we try too hard. One goal from open play in the WC is a worrying stat when you look at how open the remaining teams have been.

Gareth needs a plan B, and I don't think this squad has it yet, it's too young.

Trippier has been excelleing, my player of the team this WC. Although Kane deserves recognition for the coolness in all his Pens.

I agree to some extent that ANYONE other than Sterling should be making those runs, he's just been awful, can't finish, no final product, but does get into the right areas, I think RLC would really play well there, he';s shown good promise.

Oi oi oi Im almost considered a local these days steady on old chap lol. It's weird you know, I have been coming down here since I was 3 years old - mum's sisters both married Scottish guys (as did my mum) and the two sisters moved down here and set up home/family. Anyway back story out the way - I always thought of Canterbury as a quiet holy type city with zero crime...lol the innocence of youth. But since having lived down here for most of my adult life off and on I can safely say my eyes have opened lol.
The locals are just the same as anywhere - even central Scotland where I am from lol. Couple that with two universities and a couple of colleges with a combined total of 40k adult students....You can see actually Canterbury is "buzzing" lol.
Anyway back to the England games - You lot don't make it any easier on my old ticker.....Scotland are the past masters at it...but to have a 2nd adopted team put me through the mill like they have for ever is just unfair.....Why couldn't my relatives have moved to Brazil or something FFS !!
Sweden next, Don't write them off. England will need to up their game - but then apart from the press from the panam game onwards everyone with knowledge of England and the squad ect all knew that England were not "supposed" to win the WC this time round - IF they manage it - It will be an incredible achievement one that I think they could match in 4 years time as long as nobody leaves/gets sacked ect...as that was always the plan - a German type team rebuild full of youngsters capable of playing and benifitting from the learning curve.
Just imagine winning two WC's in a row lol - Don't worry some tabloid will get to southgate before that....as to them it's a build up and shoot down for anyone successfull.
