Default In the market for a gaming laptop - is this any good ?

    Hi all,
I've decided to replace my gorgeous but ageing Surface Book with something a bit more capable graphics wise.

I don't want to go mad and have set myself a budget of around £1k (with some wiggle room if needed)

Searched a bit yesterday and found this, currently £150 off so £899 delivered. i7 (7th gen) and gtx 1060 6GB.

    https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/P...gaming-laptops

also considering this with pretty much identical specs...

    https://www.box.co.uk/FX503VM-DM093T...p_2259824.html

and half an eye on this... just because it's 8th Gen

    https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/lapt...laptop/cn55816

Are there any others I should be looking at for that sort of price ?

    Cheers,

    malty

All those you listed will prob be fine, depends what games you want to play, the GTX 1060 is ok but may struggle to maintain 120 FPS on ultra settings on some games, things to consider is screen quality, also not sure if the GPU can be upgraded at a later date as the GTX 1060 was released July 2016 so getting on now, and games just get better and demand more power, also battery life prob wont be great if gaming maybe 1 to 1 and half hour of full gaming

do you need a laptop ? a desktop will work out cheaper and more upgradable

if it is a laptop you want then id sugest spending 1.5-2k to get the absolute up-to-date tech that will last a little longer

    Thanks to pickie

If he is playing it solely on the laptop screen the 1060 will be perfectly ok, I run one on a 4k screen with no real issues in full settings,

Thanks all, To answer, I don’t particularly need a laptop no but the versatility is what attracts me. Like gaming on my Nintendo switch, I like to play it on the tv but I also really like that I can just play it anywhere.

Looking at desktop specs, I don’t think similar spec is much cheaper anyhow, but upgradability is of course compromised in a laptop. The thing is, at £900 it would cost £200 less than my phone which I consider disposable tech. Up to a max of 2 years out of a phone and I expect to sell it cheap and rebuy something current. It would be the same with this so I’m not over fussed by upgrading anyway as I’d be more likely to replace.
I’m really asking are these decent value or should I be looking else where?
    Cheers,

    Malty

Well today’s events took a turn for the unexpected. Went to a local John Lewis store because they always have a good selection of laptops on display and indeed they had three of the laptops on display that I had been thinking about.

Straight away I was shocked how bad the screens were on all three. Absolutely awful. I think I’ve been spoiled by surface and iPad screens but these were shocking. Anyway, I then started to think about the above and what was mentioned in this thread and if I really needed a laptop after all...

It was then that in their ex demo section I spotted an asus tower. I ended up buying it
    i5 cpu
    8gb ram
    1060 gtx 6gb video card
Boxed, immaculate For £559 - complete with 2 years warranty.

Cheers everyone for making me think about what I was doing, got a very similar and upgradable spec for £350 less.

Is it very demanding on the PC to run it to the television?

Umm, no it doesn't seem to be. Older / less demanding games anyway.

I played hard reset redux on 2160p and it seemed fine, although the photo above is on 1080p

I'm not sure it would cope the same on something more modern
