Help No display or USB power however fans are on

    Evening chaps

My sons PC has stopped working, its about 16months old.

It still appears to power up, with the RGB fans lighting up but the display doesn't come on and there's no power from the rear or front USB's.

Had a look online and a few suggestions to try include removing the cmos battery for a bit and removing components and booting up each time to see if that makes a difference which ill give a bash over the weekend.

Mobo is an ASUS Prime A520M-K A520 Chipset and power supply 500w, i think if the above doesn't work its likely to be one of these that's the issue

Any other suggestions to try welcomed.

I had the exact same issue but on a new build. Im not saying this will fix yours, but its the process of elimination.
For me the Ram was the cause. I removed the two sticks of Ram and put a single stick in the first slot & viola.. POST.
I then put both back as they were originally and POST returns as normal, so dont assume if this does work, a ram stick has gone faulty.
Also, check the CMOS battery voltage. & make sure the bios is set to ext display.

    Thanks to josweet

Good news its come back to life,

Not quite sure what was wrong with it, we checked all components last night and moved the RAM sticks around ,checked the CMOS battery, removed it for a bit etc and it was still dead.

Noticed when i was moving it that the 3 pin power cable felt a bit loose when connected at the back and even a slight nudge in one direction would cause the power to cut off. There was also some crackling when it moved.

So bought a new PSU from amazon, which came tonight fitted it and it was still dead, decided to run through the checks again while the new PSU was connected, starting with RAM and after moving it from one slot to the other it came back to life.

Kept the new PSU in as didn't like the other one being loose and crackling.

Fingers crossed it behaves from now on!

Well that didn't last long lol

He had left the pc on working as normal, its went to sleep due to inactivity and we are back to the original issue when he has tried to wake it.

Sounds like the ram to me.
I have also had this issue where one module was overheating and shutting down the whole system.

Cheers, yeah I think that's the next thing we will try. It only has 1 stick of ram so will order some more to try.

Is it decent branded RAM in there? I’ve not seen many RAM issues for years but it used to be quite common. I’d disconnect everything except the essential from the mobo and use a single stick of RAM to troubleshoot. Obvious two components would be RAM or mobo at this point. Ideally would update the mobo BIOS ASAP but if it’s being unreliable then it could fail mid flash and brick it.

The brand's ADATA, which came with the PC. I'd never heard of it but after a Google search it seems pretty decent. It's only 1 16gb stick though.

Bout 2 Corsair 8gb sticks to replace arriving tomorrow so will see if it is the ram or not

I’ve come across ADATA SSDs which have been ok, wouldn’t choose them but not heard any horror stories or seen any failures. Hopefully that sorts it though, RAM issues can cause some very random symptoms.

So RAM arrived yesterday, fitted it and still the same issue.

Tried removing each component one at a time right down to nothing plugged in. Still the same.

After putting it all back together found a post on line that said to remove the battery and short the CMOS for 1 minute, tried that and it sprung back to life again.

Now the last time it came back to life I hadn't done anything other than remove the battery the night previous but had reinserted and tried to boot with no joy several times after it.

Anyway fitted a new battery and so far so good for the last 24 hours or so.

Surprised as thought the device would still have booted etc with a bad CMOS battery but i guess that maybe its way of telling you it needs replaced.

I’ve never known that symptom from a bad CMOS battery, usually there is a message at POST to tell you of a bad battery or that the date/time has been reset. I’ve only ever had to replace a handful of them too so surprised a modern board needed a new one but maybe it was just bad. Glad to hear you’ve sorted it

    Thanks to evilsatan

Ah balls, same issue cropped up again last night, no display or USB power but fans coming on, after a few nights of working fine

Removed the CMOS battery and its booted up fine. Battery was brand new , too much of a coincidence for it to be a faulty battery i think.

Think this must mean its the motherboard that's faulty ? -

I guess ill run it with the battery out for a bit and see if it happens again

If yourt feeling brave you could try a bios update if one is available so long as your aware of the risks.

You could have a jumper loose?
or a dry solder joint on the board somewhere.

seems odd that it runs for a few days then it dies.

Disable sleep/hibernate see if that helps some devices hang trying to resume.
Update bios/firmware read the fixes might have a fix in the update.

Have you tried holding power button when the fault occurs?
