Didn't know if this fitted more in the 3d printing section or DIY. As I'm buying the wood already cut and printing my own brackets it's going in here.
I got given a Mclaren F1 wheel and tyre so thought I'd make a coffee table out of it. It's got a few scuff marks on it so will probably eventually get the wheel reconditioned but for now I'll make the base. I've cleaned the brake dust/tar off of it but the scuffs around the edges will need a pro to look at. The tyre I'm thinking of using a paint pen to get the Pirelli logo a bit brighter. The tyre has had the "this tyre to be used for" bit scrubbed off but you can make out the word qualification so it's been used in a quali session somewhere.
I mocked it up in CAD to build the brackets. The wheel and tyre are models I imported from grabcad.com
Here are the bits that are actually 3d printed. The base is 25mm MDF and the brackets will just screw into that to stop the wheel moving around. I also made a spacer that will be used to align the brackets on the MDF. Could I use wood, probably but I own a 3d printer
Not much of an update to a project but it's a start. I'm waiting on my MDF board to be cut to a 360mm circle. Once that is here I'll grab legs too. I could 3d print these but want some nice aluminium ones.
