360 repair

I got a 360 in a bundle of broken parts, thought I'd have a bash at repairing it.
When plugged in power supply went straight to red, never a good sign.
Went to Open her up, somebody had already been here using a bread knife by the looks of things.

Saw a lot of liquid damaged around the power port area.
Was going to bin it, but instead using donor board swapped lots of the components in the area over as most fell over when cleaning.

To my surprise it booted, the dvd was not the one for the board, so had to rig up a glitch to get the dvd key and pair it to the board.

But it now works, just need a halo face plate to finish it off.

Give the board a good soaking of Ipa and it will sparkle.

I was wondering whether to say on discord when you mentioned the halo face plate, in case I couldn't find it, bit I used to have a spare boxed 360 halo face plate. If I look for it I might not find it, or be a ballache, but hang fire on buying one for the time being because it'll probably be around somewhere.*

* However it's just a white one with the master chief on, not green for a halo edition console.

Massive difference between an old c64 and Xbox board though.
are c64 boards multi layer?

If water gets between layers you will get swelling and broken tracks in the pcb.
also Xbox boards have components that can’t be removed like the c64 so you open to corrosion in the future.
even soaking in ipa isn’t going to remove 100% of any water from awkward places like the south bridge.

I'd never wash one with water like that, for corrosion from battery leaks ill normally use white vinegar, then once I'm happy with that and it's stopped fizzing, de ionised water, then finish off with ipa and give it a nice warm up on the pcb heater for 30 minutes to make sure its all dry where the compressed air can't get too.
Like you say once it starts corroding in-between the layers it near on impossible to stop the process.

Things have changed immensely since my days in electronics.
I used to repair tvs and videos and hi-if systems back in the mid 90s, and technology has progressed so much that rather then repairing things these days they are just replaced.
