    Default Bitlocker ...

A number of years ago I stupidly encrypted a drive containing every single photo of my kids, wedding holidays , you name it .

Ill be buggered if I can remember the password. I've tried all I used to use. I don't have the recovery key.

I've tried a program called passware to get past the encryption but it will take years.

Anyone know of a service I can send this drive to for data recovery or am I truly buggered and lost it all? Can't believe it.all those memories gone.....

    Have you googled?

There ar sways to recover the recovery key but I’m not sure if that applies to a hard disk used to back up data.
Everything points to no chance of recovery without a key but it should be saved in ms.

I know and I don’t want to be the one to say it but is this the only backup you have ?

    email some data recovery companies.
there must be one out there that can?

The whole point of encryption is to stop you accessing data without a key so although not easy nothing is impossible.

Didn't work for me as it's an external hard drive

Doing CMD prompt and putting his text in didn't give me a password like his

I typed this for you yesterday but when I went to post, the DF server was overloaded so wouldn’t post, sounds like you’ve checked your account already but I included a link just in case you hadn’t checked there:

I'd be surprised if you could crack the encryption yourself with any software yourself but perhaps a recovery firm can do it. There were vulnerabilities once upon a time but Bitlocker should be secure now. That Disk Drill guide says "you will still need to unlock the BitLocker container prior to running Disk Drill" so it is just a self promoting blog post trying to sell their own software.

When you encrypt using Bitlocker you are given a few options to back up the key. You would be asked to print it, save it, create a recovery key or if you were signed into a Microsoft account at the time you may have been given the option to save the key to your account.

Do you have a personal/business Microsoft account? Personal accounts should find saved recovery keys here: https://account.microsoft.com/device....microsoft.com

I hope you can find the key, losing data like this sucks

    Thanks to evilsatan
