So its costing more, looking the same, and no changes perhaps other than a new operating system, that likely will cripple older handsets.

I do the same as TJ, got my iPhone X release day, had it replaced 2-3 times by Apple in the 5 year consumer law period as it had some glitches, will upgrade to the 14 Pro this time around. The X has lasted me 5 years so saved a packet compared to upgrading every year when the new features were exciting.
Crazy prices to upgrade the storage though, I would have got 512GB but not paying £200 more than the 256GB model.
Don't think it's worthwhile starting a new thread for this minor comment but it's iPhone related. My mate passed away last week so I've been resurrecting old phones so I can look for photos of him. One was an iPhone 4s and I had forgotten how compact and neat it was.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...

sorry to hear that mate.
The iPhone 4 was great as before that even iPhones felt plasticy and there was an air gap between the digitiser and LCD so didn’t feel as solid. Downside was the lcd was then fused to the digitiser and replacement was done from the back so had to strip most the phone down to repair!
