So it appears that I have been paying for new discs and pads when I could have just removed them.

You laugh, but I on a website I frequent, every couple of weeks someone posts a picture of a car that's come into their workshop with missing brake pads, brake discs worn well beyond usable, tyres that look like they are ready to burst, etc.

A mechanic friend showed my pictures of a Scooby that got taken in where he worked.

2 brake calipers were cable tied up in the wheel arches. He had just bought the car few days before and said the brakes felt funny.
Had kids car seats in the back ffs.

Wait for a grinding noise and then worry about it....

That or have a look and change when needed.

Brakes and tyres are contact with the road. Do you really care about the money to ensure they are at their best?

Big set of fk off Brembos on my car and £230 per corner for tyres.....and when it's time to replace, it'll be good money well spent.

I have the tyres and brakes done before they need changing just to certain.
When my little ones in the car I need to know I can stop quickly if I have to.

And I don’t buy cheap tyres only Michelin on our motor.

There is a video on Social Media doing the rounds of a bloke using an angle grinder to cut new treads into his bald tyres and then getting an MOT pass lol
