    Default High resolution city maps

Anyone have access to or can point me to where i can grab some high resolution city maps?

Customisable if possible, i have been using Google map customiser, which is ideal, but that falls down when it comes to saving because you can only save via a screengrab which is low res.

Other solutions like MapBox, cost money.

Google Earth is no good because it only allows a satellite view, not a map view, unless i'm being incredibly thick

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you.

PS Mickey i wasn't sure which section to post this in.

    Thanks to ilscuro

couldn't someone smart create some kind of applet to rip from a web browser and the google maps website?

choose a start point, take a screenshot, it could scroll right x number of pixels, take another shot, rinse and repeat. Then collate everything to a big png file. Bobs your uncle.

There's a program that does just that called universal maps downloader, available in the usual places, but i have yet to figure it out.

I want someone to rip Mapbox's entire site please

    Thanks to ilscuro

This may or may not be of use to you. However the government has a ridiculously detailed multi-layer map tool here:

Click on the get started button and you have over 300 data layers available.

I just checked and it's working now. It can take a little while and I wouldn't recommend it via a mobile device. It's a resource heavy site.

I used universal map downloader and its perfect. Throw in the coordinates, set the detail level and leave it running.

Only problem I have is the map I wanna make is so big that once I crank up the quality, the outputted image is too big for my computer to handle, with its mere 16gig of ram. I'll probably have to half the area and make 2 maps, which was kinda the plan if it ever gets to the printing stage anyway.

I struggled to get that working, will give it another try.

Here's a couple more to try

I found a video on youtube that went over it, but id expect theres a document with the software that probably goes over it, its really simple.

In my case I went to google maps and chose the top left of where my map would start, get the coordinates of that point, then the same for the bottom right, then just put those into the app, setting the detail level adjusts the zoom level the tile grabbing will be at.
I found that the maximum zoom is unpractical as the lettering for streets is so small on the final map. A level of 16-18 means the letters are as wide as a standard road. You can then start it going. After its done you go to the map combiner in the tools menu and load the .umd file you will have just made.

I was a little over ambitious and set it up to do the entire city I'm in, at max detail, which resulted in 1.2 million tiles being grabbed, just downloading those alone would have taken me about 3 days and looking at how difficult a way smaller map is to handle, I'd need Bill gate's PC to open it.

The image i can't open is 136,000 x 60,000 pixels, so, its probably way higher than the print level would be anyway, so maybe I still need to make a few adjustments...
