    Default New to smoking - any advice

    Just bought myself a Pro Q Elite smoker and was wondering if anyone had any advice before I give it a blast over the weekend? It's similar to the Weber Smokey mountain (IE: Bullet Smoker) and is beautifully made so shouldn't have any issues with losing heat or smoke leaking. Was thinking of doing some pulled pork as I've read it's fairly forgiving. Any advice would be appreciated.

    I didn't see this either TBH, I don't smoke but I do BBQ frequently and I would say this.

    Invest in good quality restaurant grade Charcoal, it burns more consistently, ensuring your get a steady temperature.

    I do a lot of long BBQs in the summer for parties and such, and often use Olive or Big K.

    yep mate does bbqs and they buy the cheapest stuff they can get, they ran out so i brough a expensive bag and they were shocked how much better it was

    Yeah, I'm getting on Ok - I use coconut briquettes for a longer, hotter burn. I've got a Pro Q smoker which is only a small one but it holds temp very nicely. Had some really nice pulled pork from it but it really is an all day job. We don't seem to get the same cuts of meat as the US so it can be a pain to find a decent butcher who knows what you're after. You can pretty much forget about getting the right piece of brisket except online.

    Are you using the water pan with the Pro Q or have you switched to the terracotta plate/sand mod?

    To be honest, I haven't used either since the first couple of uses. I really struggle to get it above 225f with a water pan in.

    I have been so desperate to add a sarcastic comment to this thread.

    Start with small puffs.
    Don’t inhale too much and prepare to cough (A lot)
    Make sure you have some expendable cash flow it’s an expensive and stinky habit.

    Purchase a really good umbrella you will need that in winter when you have to spend hours outside pubs and eateries.
