    Help Wiring Help

    Hi all,

Doris recently purchased a new light for bathroom, and it's given me nothing but grief. It's a modern "tool less" install (i.e. Wank) and I'm about to throw it out the window.

The light itself is the end of a loop, which should simplify things, but no. See attached photos - the fitting has 3 terminals, although interestingly earth is one of these, leavin just 2 for the live, neutral and then the switch wire.

I've tried both neutrals assuming one must be the switch, but in one configuration the light is permanantly on, and the other configuration results in a tripped fuse.

Any ideas? Am I being a complete numpty?

If you have a multimeter or continuity tester, put it between red and black on both cables and use the switch it'll tell you which is your switch wire if it's high resistance then low or not continuous and then continuous. Power off obvs.
You should end up with red and red together you'll need an extra terminal then switched live (black) into the live and the other into the neutral

    Try this buddy

You will need to know which is the switched cable which is simple enough.
Attach a meter to one of the red and one of the black cables in one pair, pull the cord and you should get a short across the meter.

When you have found the switched cable connect the red from the switched to the red of the second cable and isolate.
Put the black from the switched into the L socket of the lamp. (Whack some red tape around the black so you know it's a live feed)

Now put the other black cable from the live feed into the N socket and you have a light.
    (for switched Live)

Don't forget to connect the earths.

As above find the switch wire !! What you did earlier was connect the two perm lives into the live terminal - Instead Connect both reds into a terminal block. Connect one of the blacks into the neutral of the light and the black coming from the switch to the live terminal of the light. Finally sleeve the earths with green and yellow earth sleeving and connect all of them into the earth terminal.
To find the switch wire power off twist one of the cables at the light together eg red&black from the same cable together at light - at the switch on the wall attach multi meter to red and black and check for continuity - even the buzzer function will do...if it buzzes when you attach then you know the twisted wire at the light fiting is your switch wire....if it didnt buzz then untwist and do the 2nd cable red black together check using multi meter it should now buzz...then as above THAT is your switchwire.
When you find your switchwire (black) mark it using a bit of either brown sleeving or tape and connect it into the light fitting live.
