Default Sony Xperia X deleted all photos - how to recover?

It's a mates dads phone, according to him he was taking a photo and all of a sudden all his photo library disappeared. I have gone into the Files app, looked at the internal storage and the DCIM folders are empty as are pictures etc. It looks like the card has been formatted.

I enabled developer mode, turned on USB debugging but I can't expose it as a mass storage device to run Photorec from my PC. I installed Diskdigger but without root it can't see the internal storage to run the scan. I used the following site to see if a root was available but it says there isn't one:

    Sony Xperia X F5121
    Android 8.0.0
    Build 34.4.A.2.118

I very rarely have to do anything on an Android so am stumped at this point, any other ideas?

    Cheers

EDIT: Just found [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]so will read through.

According to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], as it says bootloader unlock is not allowed I guess I am out of options.
