    Help Windows 10 Key Finder?

    Hi,

I want to update my laptop's SSD drive, but, I need to source the Windows 10 key from the laptop, but, I cannot find it.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thank you

If it's a legit windows 10 you have in the laptop it will be linked to your Microsoft account, no need for a key. I just done the same last month and couldn't find my key so downloaded Windows 10 from the ms site installed, logged in and at no point was asked for a key.

if your changing the HDD then youll need the key, only things like a gpu change or amount of ram will no trigger the your installing this on a new pc flag
but give it a try first, if it does trigger then you will need to buy windows again as the upgrade was for 1 pc only

You can upgrade your hdd/ssd without needing your key, I've done it many times.

Windows 10 activates with a digital licence so as above, a new HDD/SSD will not need a key. If you see the screen requesting the key then click the link at the bottom that says you don't have one. I've only seen changes of motherboard cause an issue as it looks like a different system.

If you don't need the key, then this advice is moot. But I was installing Windows on a load of old laptops recently and the product key was on the battery.

Just arrived today my daughters 250g SSD
opened up case, removed cables to DvD ROM
Added these to the new SSD
    ran acronis from usb stick
    selected clone disk
10 minutes later her new SSD is fast and running sweet with no License key issues
(Acronis re-configured the new drive and expanded all the partitions accordingly)

It took me longer to swap out the old Boot drive (Hitachi 160g drive circa 2009),cables and change the bits n bobs inside the case rather than the new install

Windows 10 is a dream to clean install too, so fast from booting to the install media to reaching the desktop.

The only issue i've had with cloning and upgrading to SSD is if the HHD has bad sectors.

Had it once or twice, so before i do a clone i always run a chkdsk /f before hand on the HDD.

Im getting loads of requests to upgrade from 7 to 10 at the moment, MS are really putting the frighteners on people.
