Default Problems installing Win 10 on new laptop

My laptop arrived today. It has no OS so I thought it would be pretty straightforward but I've completely messed up. I have a win 10 key so I downloaded the software required from the MS website and set it up to install from a USB. The first problem I had was when I got to the install stage:

There was a warning at the bottom of the page telling me I couldn't install as it had to be formatted to NTFS. Anyway not knowing what I was doing I played about with some settings in the bios and now it won't even boot to DOS so I can format it to NTFS

What should I change the Bios back to so it boots to DOS?

When you click on the photos they go sideways. How do I fix that?

I managed to answer my own question of sorts. I noticed there was a setting in bios to return to default mode. I selected that but I'm back at the stage where I'm unable to install windows.

But like a complete fanny I think I formatted the first partition which I assume holds DOS. So I guess I'll need to install DOS first before I can format the disc to NTFS. Where can i get DOS from?

you should not need to reinstall DOS, you should just boot from the USB into the windows install, as its a new HDD i would just delete the partitions so its just one large block of data that says Unallocated space . Format to whatever it needs to be and install it from there.

You want the drive you are installing to to say Unallocated space.

An easier way, if you got the hardware is to use a pc and boot into windows and stick the drive either inside the pc on a spare connector or use one of them caddy units. Once inside windows goto partition and do it from there

As lou3b said above, but also ensure BIOS has AHCI activated and legacy support enabled.

Any mention of UEFI, disable it.

Boot via USB install media, clear partitions and let Windows sort it all out.

It won't let me install windows.

I'm getting an error message stating:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks.

I've no idea what this is.

Cancel that. I disabled UEFI and its working now. No mention in the bios of AHCI though.

Thanks for all your help. I'm up and running now. It didn't install the wireless network adaptor but managed to find it on the web. Now I'll spend most of the day installing software

    Glad you got it sorted.
Make sure to install your Chipset drivers from you laptop manufacturer's website. Makes a difference in performance.

Problem I have now is I have 10Gb of allocated space in a partition. I tried to extend it to my C drive but the extend function is greyed out.

Windows 10 used to create a partition of 8 to 10 gig for updates.

You can check it withe mini tool partition wizard. But 10Gb reserved for Windows 10 sounds about right.

Yes mate, I'm very happy with it so far. I have two smaller laptops but wanted a bigger screen seeing as I'm using it more WFH. Be prepared for delivery being delayed a few times. Took a month from ordering to end up at my door.

It always helps me when working with Acronis Disk Director sections. You can even make a bootable flash drive and create partitions without using Windows. Very simple interface, can be understood by anyone.

    Thanks to kennystone
