Default more about the online adapter!

    heres what i asked sony:
    Hello
I just want to know if the playstation 2 + sony internet adapter can be
place in a network with my computer(i would place 2 network card, one
plugged to the ps2 and the other plugged with the cable modem) and then
set the ip, i did it with other computer before but i wanna know if it can
be done with a ps2, because my isp doesnt allow us to place a router and i
really want to play ps2 online!
    and heres what they anwsered:
    Hello Louis,

    Thank you for writing us.

If you access the Internet using either DSL or high-speed cable, and you only
    have 1 home computer
(i.e., you do not have a home network, or "Local Area Network" (LAN) of multiple
    computers connected
to the Internet), you will need to follow these steps to connect your Network
    Adaptor
(Ethernet/Modem) (for PlayStation(R)2) to your current setup:

    1. You must disconnect your ethernet cable from behind your COMPUTER and
    reconnect this cable
directly into your Network Adaptor's "NETWORK" Port. Do not disconnect any of
    the cables from
behind your DSL or Cable MODEM. Your PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment
    system must be
connected to your DSL or Cable Modem in order to communicate to the Internet.

A flowchart displaying this setup would show:
"NETWORK" Port on the Network Adaptor ------> connects via ethernet cable to
    ------> DSL or Cable
Modem ------> which connects to -------> Your Wall (outside Internet
    connection/your ISP)

    -OR-

    2. You can purchase a DSL/Cable Router along with the appropriate ethernet
    cables (available at
your local computer/electronics retailer). This device will allow you to
    connect multiple computers
(including the PlayStation 2 console) into a single DSL or high-speed cable
    Internet connection
entering your home. This option will be more costly (because of the equipment
    costs involved),
however, you will have the convenience of never having to disconnect the
    ethernet cable from behind
your computer to share your Internet connection.

so i was like, wtf i said i cant put a router and i want the computer to work at the same time as the ps2
so i emailed them back and im waiting for another anwser

Yes, you can use a router, or two network cards in your PC with Internet Connection Sharing software, and your ISP will never know.

You can even set the router to clone the MAC address of your current network card.

I think that reply that Sony sent you was just a general-mass email they're sending concerning the NA (network adapter)

It's sometimes really hard to get definitive answers to minute questions. So generalizing is the best thing they can offer.

But concerning your router issue, I find it pretty weird that your cable provider does not allow for a router. Probably playing mind games with ya so that they can get you to rent another modem for them so the corporate big-wigs can make more $$$.

Internet --> Cable modem --> PC (server) --> PC (client).

Now my question is: Could I place a PS2 as a client? That is, can I connect the PS2 indirectly to the internet through another PC. And should I use the same cable, and can I switch between PC&PS2?
    Thanks in advance

the ps2 just uses dhcp or static settings. As long as you use a gateway and have a dns server from your isp (which you will) you can use it

Haha, that's funny, your ISP saying if you can't use a router or you need to pay extra for each connection. What a joke. Yeah, they CANNOT tell when you are doing this... they will see one single MAC address, that being from the router. So get one and don't worry about it.

That's like the old days with cable TV.. they all wanted you to pay for each connection in your house. They would constantly try to find out when people were using splitters for multiple TVs and would tell them to disconnect. Finally after realizing this fight was futile, they gave up and stopped charging extra for more outlets.

Yeah, Im wondering how easy it will be to find. I want to pick one up for sure. But I wonder this. What happens if you plug any old HDD in and run it? Im sure there is some type of PS2 partition on the official drives, But I imagine that HD partition is installed from a driver disc. Itd be cool if we could just add whatever HDD we wanted. We'll see I guess. But Im gonna try it

Well the release date was Wednesday the 28th. I couldn't find one that day and Best Buy didn't even receive them, but I called them Thursday morning and they had them.. they told me to hurry down because they were getting snatched up quick. I went down and got mine... there were probably 20-30 of them left by the looks of it.

a lot of places actually didn't get shipments in and if they did they got only a few. I had to get mine on ebay.

yeah most companies dont allow you to use routers but won't know unless like everyone on your modem grid starts doing it. Im hooking up 2 pcs and a ps2 to my router
