Who cares about the competition with other countries? Most Americans don't. We have the best players in our own country to keep us occupied (see SupaMonkey's post; although I don't agree %100 with his dream team, mine would be close).
no matter how good any other country gets, the money is in america. if players are THAT good, they will eventually start playing in the US for the $$$.
but when this happens, basketball is no sport any longer, but then just a big show!
