Default cd-r music without a mod chip?

I hope this isn't a dupe, I looked through most the forum and didn't see it.

One of the coolest features on a lot of xbox games is personal soundtracks, being able to use your own mp3s as the game music. How does one go about getting the mp3s onto your box? I know you can rip off of audio cds, but it wont load up any of my burnt discs.

Is it possible without modding my box?
Is it because I'm using low quality cd-r's?

    Thanks in advance

Some Xbox's can actually use burnt CD-R's but nobody seems to know how. One thing that works for me was to burn a CD-RW and then have the Xbox copy the music. It kept saying the media was wrong, but after like three tries it worked.
