    Default Defragging

Ok this is stupid. I just defragged my hd (20% space left). It's a 60gb hd. The fragmentation went down by like 1%. What's up with this? I also defragged my other hd (on my other pc) and there was no more red in the analyze thing.

Yes it does if you have win95/98/me.
If you've got winNT/2k/XP, you don't need to worry as much about it.

You might try a third party defragger. I use PerfectDisk with XP, works great.

Defragged my HD today. It was a while ago since, and now it works like a charm. And oh, I used the program that came with Windows XP.

o&o defrag is teh l33t3st t00l to use for defragging

gotta check the other one out though....but i agree that defragging doesnt do shit...or maybe like doing it once a year or sumthin.

But defragging maybe helps if your files and folders is one big unholy mess..mine never is thats maybe why it doesnt help...i still use o&o sometimes though just because it looks cute.

BTW important thing...if your disks is full or almost full you can never get them fully defragged...they need a certain amount of freespace...the bigger disc the bigger space needed...on a 60 GB drive/partition i think you need atleast 5-10 GB free.

youre supposed to defrag once a month but i never do it because it takes too long and i never noticed a speed incrase. i format every about every 3 months, i reccomend everyone do that its the best thing you can do for a noticible speed incrase in windows. windows tends to 'decay' over time, in linux it isnt as apparent

You will only notice the difference if you have a fast hdd or you have tons of small files.

I got about 50,000 files on my comp, prolly more (guessing) and if your constantly deleting and creating files you're hdd will become fragmented. End of story, dosent matter if you use win9x or WinNT based OS's. WinNT handles it much better but files still become fragmented. Just takes alot longer.

yeah you're right mystic. i have shitloads of small files an within a month or so of getting my new hd and filling it up my burn speed (meaning the burn speed i can burn @ without getting buffer errors) went from 16x (my max) to 8x.
Still defragging now lol. It's taking about 10 hours.

    Pfftt...

Come back when you have a defrag that takes 3 days to complete.

    Been there, done that.

(for those wondering, that would be a huge hard drive with a small processor and little ram, on which defrag probably hadn't been run in about 2 years of heavy file movement/creation/deletion)

What OS you're using doesn't really make a difference, it's the file system that's important from that aspect. NTFS handles the file system much better than FAT(32) and need less defragmenting. It's also been my experience that NTFS deframents MUCH faster than FAT32.

Anyway, I defragment my drives when I haven't done it in a while and I know that I won't use the computer for many hours (a rare occurence).

umm, do it while you sleep perhaps? or are you an insomniac?
