Check if you can find in your manual, what the 3 fried pins are used for, it will probably reveal what has happened.

It's got to be one of these three though, Power Supply, Motherboard or CPU. My guess is the Power Supply.

    All the best

Definitely the PSU overloading. The three burnt pins are all from the same power line (same colour wires).

it looks to me as though the problem has come from a "loose" connection or even a "dry" solder joint

    I agree with 5 bellies.

The red wires are the 12V from the PSU. It looks as thought it got a massive surge of power.

Have you tried taking the motherboard back????

They will probably also blame the PSU and may not replace it.

I would take it back, and not tell them about it. Just put the connector back in, and say the thing just keeps turning itself off.

Let them sort it out, then its not your fault. You dont have to tell them youve looked at it.

sorry, just read your post properly! LOL

Take it back anyway, and say the blob of solder screwed it up, and blew your PSU. Say you were using the PSU with another motherboard initially so you knew it worked fine.

    Default UPDATE !!

Ok I was gona take the motherboard back and they asked me to bring the power supply, when I took a look at the supply it turns out that my trusty 300w power supply on closer inspection is only around 265w I’m sure to PSU over loaded...

Anyway I decided to repair it ( the mother board that is )....

First I took the short of the floppy connector out...

    Default lose plug

I guess that the fault would have been the fact that the plug was not pushed home and it was tracking out, arcing, that is why the computer kept shutting down. If the power supply gave a surge the damage would not be on the power plug it would be on the weakest part of the circuit, like a thin track or a component would have cooked, as for the PSU not being powerful enough, that would have blown either the PSU itself or just the potection fuse in the PSU. The short circuit on the board may have no barring on the problem because the computer worked? if the short was a problem then the computer would not have worked and it would have smoked from the beginning.

    Hope this helps,

    Lurch
