Default splitting cable wire so it can go into BB and cable box

i have NTL broadband, and a chipped cable box. i swap the main cable wire between the 2(it was originally for the Broadband). its getting a bit boring doing this. is it possible for me to get the cable wire and put it in a 3 way converter, so the signal can go to the Broadband and cable box? or will this screw the speed of my broadband and screw me watching cable tv?
    has anybody else done this?

did this earlier this week and it works great. don't forget the extra cables u need as well so u don't have to go back. u will probably need 2 x f-type to f-type cable for your splitter to cable modem connection and for your splitter to decoder box connection

A couple of days ago I had NTHell broadband installed. I don't have a cable box, so I connected the coax straight to my tv (which tunes down to the VHF cable frequencies) and tuned around. As well as the FTV channels I also found Sky 1, UK Horizons, Animal Planet, The Box and Nick/Paramount all in the clear. I was just wondering why this was so when they are subscription channels?

btw...does anyone know what encryption system is used on NTHell analogue cable?

Sorry, I didn't mention in my previous post that I CAN receive the other encrypted channels (about 22 of them) but obviously cannot watch them because of the encryption. So most of them are encrypted, but I was wondering why the ones I mentioned were in the clear?
Do you know the actual name of the encryption method or can point me in the direction of any sites with info. I don't want to hack it as I'm not realy interested in cable TV, but I used to build decoders in the early days of satellite analogue encryption. Some of those early systems were fairly easy to crack. I was wondering if the cable companies were still using old encryption methods?
