xbox cd rom dvd rom thingy

can they be changed and if so wot type are they (laptop versions or std cdrom size?)

cos im thinking when i stick linux on mine i may want a writer on it so i can back up stuff

yea CAM u can replace your dvd drive and yes all replacements "ive" seen have been with a std cd rom..
1 problem with replacing your dvd drive to a pc dvd drive, is that u canot read original discs with it...some people totally replace it not worrying about the originals, some have the pcdvd rom external, so if they did want to play originals, they use the normal xbox drive... below is a link to tutorials page on xbox-scene.com, scrol down to XBOX HARDWARE ADDONS/MODIFICATIONS, and youll find some tutorials with pictures of replacing dvd drive ...

i dont know if thers specifically tutorial of a replacement to dvd "writer" but im guessing should be same thing?? cuz all ive seen is normal pc dvd roms... just a suggestion

just plug and play, you dont need to bother with the eject button mods (unless you're that fussed - just use the eject on the front of the drive), just plug the ide cable into the dvd-rom drive and use a power splitter from the hdd.

yea u can i guess but some people are "fussed" about keeping looks of xbox how it is (like me)... i done mine like superfro's replacement tutorial...very neat.

when u say dont play original discs do u mean ne original discs or just xbox

cos i wont be useing my xbox to play games on

and i would be fitting a cdrw to it not a dvdrw (im to poor for a dvdrw)

and CAM yea i dont see why u cant play normal original cd's on your rom when u conect it, should be fine BUT, double check anyways cuz im not 100 percent, but about 90

You cannot play original xbox games or dvd movies in a replacement drive. Dvd movie playback can be acheived only if you use a software player like dvd-x 2.0

hmm maltloaf... so your saying with a replaced pc dvd drive, it wont play dvd movies?? unless using a software player like dvd-x 2.0? and how does one use such software?? By using a evolx dashboard for example??

you dont need to install a evo-x dash to use dvd-x , you can run it from cdrw
