i am adsl but the speed of of it various very much, one minute you can be downloading at 55kbs then it can suddenly go down to 2.28 etc, any ideas cheers

There's several things that can affect your d/l speed niky, the speed of the site / ftp you're d/l from etc and also the contention ratio for your connection (basically the amount of connections to the modem at the exchange at any one time).

Fluctuating speed seems to be the norm for most - even ADSL users

You can have a look at http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and give your connection a quick test just to give you some idea of your current speeds.

Not had ADSL long myself so I was a little surprised at how much it changes while d/l, even though I pay extra to have a smaller contention rate it can still crawl along occasionally.
