RAID 0 is striping. RAID 1 is mirroring. RAID 0+1 is striping plus mirroring.

RAID 0 is beneficial only if you have a high level of drive I/O. Because the data is 'striped' across two or more drives it improves access times providing the drives are on seperate controllers. It offers no redundancy, so basically if one of the drives fails, or the stripe set becomes corrupted, you're pretty much screwed.

RAID 1 is the least efficient. However it does offer 100% redundancy, and performance is improved by the fact that 2 reads are possible opposed to a single disk. However general performance will not be much better (if at all) from a single drive system.

Actually, go have a look here. It explains each RAID level and what it's pros and cons are. However, you'll be limited to 0, 1 or 0+1 without a seperate hardware controller.
