That sounds like a Winsock error mate, what service pack revision are you at, as it might be worth trying to reapply that..

If you do 'ipconfig /all' do you even get an IP address listed?

What type of card is it as well as it might be worth trying to get hold of the manufacturer's driver to see if that works...

Aido that sounds pretty interesting mate - I did a google search and it was telling me that the error was a Winsock error... yet it don't mean to much to me... ;(

I've just tried doing an 'ipconfig /all' on both machines yet the dos run window disappears before I can see the results ;(

I'll get service pack 1 installed on the second pc now (I was reluctant to do this as it gave me a little hassle when I did it on my dodge version last time) do you think that this could sort it?

I just find it strange that the network can go down like this without any major changes being made anywhere.

Thanks and I'll post when I get SP1 installed.

    Cheers,

    dEVS!

You want to run ipconfig /all from the command prompt - type cmd into the start -> run box and then run the command from there....

Apply the service pack mate, if you get trouble then you need to change the product id - have you done that already?

On another note, is anything in the Event Logs?

Waht are the addresses as well mate as a matter of interest?

Okay I'll bang on SP1 now - I've changed the id on my machine yet not on the other - I need to dig out the key. Do I need to change the key on the other pc before i install sp1?

    Cheers,

    My main pc www.dital.co.uk/pc/1.gif

    2nd pc www.dital.co.uk/pc/2.gif

What can I do now mate?

    Thx a lot,

Ok mate, we need to clarify whether the second machine is getting an IP address, if you run ipconfig /all from a command prompt on the second machine we can see if it's getting one..

Are there any errors in the Event Log?

Is that error message you get a popup or in a log file somewhere?

Have you got any ports forwarded thru the router for VNC or remote assistance or anything like that so I can have a gander?

Firstly many thx for all your help here mate – I’m very grateful!

Okay here is what I get for an ipconfig /all on the 2nd pc…

    www.dital.co.uk/pc/ipconfig.gif

You can by all means take a look on my main pc via remote assistance my msm email address is stevedevline@hotmail.com if that’s what you need? Yet I can’t get you on the 2nd machine as I can not access it via the network…

I don’t know how to access the error log so I can’t check that mate…

    Thx,

    Devs.

There's a problem getting an IP address anyway, what gives out the addresses - the router?

Just as a matter of interest it might be worth configuring the other box temporarily for DHCP to see whether it is working or not...

Tell you what mate, try that to see what happens, and maybe also try configuring the other box as follows:

    IP: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1

    What happens?

But can the PC's ping each other when they're both on 192.168.0.* addresses?

If that is working try the following on each machine do you get anything back:

    Machine A: nbtstat -A 192.168.0.2
    Machine B: nbtstat -A 192.168.0.1

If you can get that bit working then it's a start but what Ryan says is easier

Oh man sorry to sound lame but I don’t have a clue about networking at all ;(

I’m not sure if it’s the router that gives out the address I would guess not…

I’m not 100% sure what you want me to do on each machine ;( ?

I’ve just set the IP address to 192.168.0.1 on both pc’s and I got the error that there is a conflict of ips on the network so they must be seeing each other some how?

Sorry my email address is stevedevlin@hotmail.com

You can't have the same IP on both machines, one should be 192.168.0.1 and the other should be 192.168.0.2

    You have mail anyway mate

Between myself and Ryan I'm sure we'll think of something to help!
