    Home Networking From Hell!

Hi I really need a hand setting up a home network on two PC’s running Win XP Pro – People keep on telling me that it’s a piece-of-piss to do yet I can never get it running ;( What I ideally would like to do is be able to share my Broadband connection / printer and scanner with the other machine.

So far I have the following to nics and a 3Com Office Connect Hub… With the following settings…

On Both PC’s in ”Network Connections” I have a “Local Area Connection” that is “enabled” With a status of “connected”

I also had various folders from previous attempts in “My Network Places” that did not work ;( they gave the error network path was not found… So they now live in the bin.

That’s about as far as I have got…

If anyone could help me out that would be great

    Cheers,

    dEVS!

Can the PC's ping each other ? thats the first test - if so then the connection is good and the rest is down to the setup/permissions etc. If not then we need to look at the network settings or cabling.

I have the same setup here with 2 XP sharing a USB broadband connection and a printer.

    Cheers

Wow I'm really gett'in there now!!! I've sorted out the firewall problem! My last question is how do I share a folder on my desktop? I've created a folder and right clicked properties and checked "Share this folder on the network" Yet when I hit apply I get the following error message... The Server service is not started - The shared resource was not created at this time.

I search throught the help yet can find anything relating to this error message? If anyone know's what could be wrong? Plz let me know!

    Cheers,

Right click My Computer and select Manage.
    Double click Services and Applications.
    Double click Services.
Scroll down the list of services and double click Server.
    Click the Start button.
Set the Startup type to Automatic.
    Click Apply and OK.

Why does it always happen to me? I was funk'in around fitting a zip drive to the other pc and I fired them back up and bingo the network is now funked! ;(

I did'nt make any changes to any setting the only thing that I did was unplug the HUB for a min..

I've ipconfig'd and ping'd both machine's and they are seeing each other yet I can acess the net on the other machine or any shared folders?

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    dEVS!

    P.S. The firewall is off

Try setting up a ip on your main machine put in 192.168.0.1 and leave the other at auto config ip but have the default gate way at 192.168.0.1 and it should work every time from that

Hi Ryan and thx for the reply mate

Yeah you’re your 100% right I don’t have any fun with the old networking – I don’t know what I’ve done wrong in the past??? But nothing ever seems to go straight forward for me…

Okay I tried removing Tcp/ip and then reinstalling it… restarted and the same error appears.

I’ve tried disabling the firewall and AV software yet it doesn’t make a difference I’ve also tried the repair function and that didn’t work ;(

    Any other ideas mate?

    Thanks,

    dEVS!
