Rover 216 mixture probs ?

Hi all
Just bought a banger. It's an 1989 Rover 216s. (cost me 140 quid LOL..BUT its a runabout AND it's got 10 months MOT )
The only 2 problems I've found with it, is
(1) that it seems HORRIBLY rich, (black smoke, running on when switched off etc.)
Is it possible to adjust the mixture on these things, (it looks like an old SU type carb but I cant find an adjuster anywhere)
And
(2) The charging light is constantly on (even though the battery is charging) is this possibly an alternator fault ?

Any suggestions ? (apart from the obvious, 'cos I already thought about scrapping it )

Hi Pongo, just off the top of my head, is there an engine controller under the bonnet, if so it controls the ignition and the carb. Use to do lots of these, if you need it checking just PM me. The controler is a motorola unit and I think the part number should be MEQ10003 or MEQ10060.

The latest is that I got a Haynes manual at a Car boot sale at the weekend, It turned out that the stepper motor temp sender was fcuked. Got one from a scrapper for a quid
Now..Anyone got any ideas about the alternator ?
