I have one of these drives and can vouch that they are good value. Some people had problems with the smaller IBM drives packin in, but these seem to be ok. The only thing I would advise is keep them cool because they do run warm if you give them alot of stick. A Hard disk cooler is a must for one of these drives.

Think I might make a purchase so I can have 240Gig storage... :-)

F**k IBM drives, buy them at your own risk, i've had 2 pack up in the last 12 months. They are w@nk.

Only buy the drives that still give you a 3 year warranty, if you can find any. I recently bought a 120Gb Western Digital, spins at 7,200 and has a 8Mb buffer so it's ok. Its the only drive I could find with a 3 year warranty.

IBM 180GB 180GXP 8Mb Catch come with a 3year warranty, plus they are faster than WD's equivalent.

''A Hard disk cooler is a must for one of these drives.''

Save your self some dollar and just buy 2 cheap £1.30 80mm case fans wire them in series (6Volt) and then mount them underneath your HD so that a constant quiet cool breeze is blowing onto the HD's belly.

My 180GXP has been running 24-7 for the last 4months without a problem. I agree though that some of the older generation DEATHstars had issues, but am pretty confident that IBM have sorted it now.

    BTW,

Now had mine 8 months running about 10 hours a day with near constant disk access (MPEG recrunching) without any problems, but it would more likely be 8 days if I did'nt have a cooler for it...

Why should I have to buy a cooling system for my HD? F**k that, for the few miliseconds in access time I'd save I'll stick with my WD.

i would go for maxtor or west-digi, i have had a 10 gig west-digi for 4 years now, and its never let me down, its been in and out of pc's, chucked on the back seat in the car and it is (as far as i am concerned) more reliable than the ibm, but thats my opinion from past experience.

    good luck wi ur ibm's

this is one of them things where everyone has different opinions about makes.

before i bought one of these i only ever used to buy maxtor drives, but then i was reccommended to an ibm deskstar, so i read up on the net and they seemed to sort out any troubles they had.

oh for the record my pc is on almost 24hrs a day and i have no hard drive cooler, but i do have 3 case fans so its cool enough.

my 80gig one is still goin strong after about 10months
