Default Jenas named PFA Young Player of the Year

Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas has spoken of his "slight surprise" after deservedly being named as the PFA's Young Player of the Year.

The 20-year-old has had a season to remember during his first full campaign in the Premiership.

The former Nottingham Forest man has been a key figure for Sir Bobby Robson's side as they pursue a Champions League finish, with the player also winning his first full England cap in the recent defeat against Australia at Upton Park.

He said: "I felt I'd had a good season but to win this shows me what the other players think of me and it's a great achievement.

"I was slightly surprised but I knew I'd be in the running because I believe in my own ability and I was hoping I would be up there and it is so nice to win it."

Jenas edged out Newcastle team-mate Craig Bellamy, John O'Shea (Manchester United), Jermain Defoe (West Ham), Scott Parker (Charlton) and Wayne Rooney (Everton).

Meanwhile, Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was beaten in the race to be named PFA Player of the Season by Arsenal hitman Thierry Henry.

Chelsea's Gianfranco Zola, Southampton's James Beattie and United pair van Nistelrooy and Paul Scholes were also nominated.

Has he been consistant all season????

I would say that over the whole season i would say Scott Parker but congrats anyway...

I wouldnt be surprised if Newcastle had about 3 entries next year with all the young stars they are linked with...

I would of picked Scott Parker or John O'Shea ahead of Jenas but he's still a very worthy winnwer of the award.
