    Default Remote Shutdown Problem

I've got 2 PC's networked together on a workgroup but i cannot remotly shutdown either.

Both are using XP and i have got the command right but all i get is access denied.

The command i have used is

    Shutdown -s -m \\bigred

Has anyone got any ideas how to solve this problem.

    Cheers

    Is "bigred" running a firewall?
Access Denied error messages would have me looking at permissions.

Need to add the user in to the other computer and set it as admin you can also shut down PC remotely by

    Right click my computer
    Manage
    Right click Computer management local
Find the other computer on network
Now right click the same bit and go to properties
Hit the advanced tab and shut down

    Ryan 5262.

I have tried what you sugested but when i try and look at the properties i get access denied.

I think it's something to do with the user bit.

How do i add the user in the other machine

You can add new users via the Computer Management MMC snap-in... Right click 'My Computer' and select Manage.

Under System Tools there is an option called Local Users and Groups - expand this and right click on the Users folder - select the New User option.

Just bang all the details in and when you're done, click Create.

Once you've made the user just double click it, click the Member Of tab and then add the user to the Administrators group.

If you use the same username and password as Ryan says Windows will use passthru authentication and it should just work.

If you want to use a different username and password then just create an IPC connection before trying the shutdown - ie:

    net use \\(computername)\ipc$ /u:(computername)\(username) (password)
    For example,
    net use \\bigred\ipc$ /u:bigred\mrflash foxyroxi
You should then get a message saying command completed successfully and the shutdown should then work.....

OK mate, load the Local Security Policy MMC from the Administrative Tools menu, then drill down into Local Policies / User Rights Assignment. What groups are in Force shutdown from a remote system - administrators should be in there.

If you do the following at a command prompt do you still get Access Denied:

    dir \\bigred\c$
Does the net use command work correctly?

If you like I could take a look remotely - my email address is aido@mybad.co.uk if you want to send me a remote assistance request....

This is what I use to remotely turn off my loft PC's.
Just UnRar and place on remote PC, no need to install anything.
