Has anyone got a similar Mac and PC set up?

Hi people – I’ve got a PowerMac G4 running windows OS X 10.2.6 and a Windows PC running XP Pro. I would like to share an ADSL internet connection between them yet I can figure out the settings required ;(

The ADSL connection goes straight into the mac then the mac joins a hub and the pc connects to the hub.

If anyone has a similar set up I’d love to know your network settings…

    Cheers,

    dEVS!

    Alright mate?

On the Mac, you go into the System Preferences dialog, then in the internet section there's a bit on sharing, if you click that you'll see an internet tab at the right hand side where you can start Internet Sharing across the adaptor..

All you then need to do is make sure that the XP box is set to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS servers via a DHCP server (in this case the Mac)

That should be all you need to do mate to get it working....

Great that worked first time mate!!! You would'nt beleive how long I've been trying to figure it out!

The last thing that I need to do mate is...

I have an extra HD in my PC that I would like to share with the Mac - how do I set this up mate?

    many thanks,

    dEVS!

    P.S. Have a great weekend!

P.S.S I've enabled file shareing on the extra PC HD and then when I try and sellect the PC via "apple and k" (connect to server) I'm not sure what should be in the At: or Address: Fields?

OK, mate, this is dead easy...

You can wait for it to send out broadcasts to the PC or even easier, use the address bar..

Say your PC is called Alpha, and the sharename is Apps, you'd enter the following into the address box:

    smb://alpha/apps

    Then just hit connect.

You should now get the SMB / CIFS Filesystem Authentication message...

Just enter a username and password that you have on the XP machine, and make sure you enter the workgroup of the PC. - once you click ok the share should be mounted onto the OSX Desktop.

Hi Aido - you wouldn’t believe it mate! I've managed to fu(k things up again! When I got the PC to share the Mac's connection I thought that I should really get a firewall setup on the Mac to protect both machines - yet after installing NetBarrier X I blocked out the network connection between them... So I played around trying to allow the PC to connect yet it wasn’t having it so I decided to remove netbarrier and come back to it another time. Yet I still can't get the connection shared again ;(

Here are a couple of link's to screen grabs so you can see the config. on both machines and hopefully suss out what’s going wrong?

Why've you got NWLink installed mate?

You can take that off if you're not using it.

The settings look right to be fair - is the XP box getting an IP address?

Do an 'ipconfig /all' at the command prompt to see what address it's got - if it's having problems it will probably begin with 169.*

Try doing an 'ipconfig /renew' and see if this sorts it out.

Maybe some traces of the firewall are still on the Mac?

Hi Buddy and thanks again for the help it's much appreciated!

I had no idea why I had NWLink installed? Yet when I tried to uninstall it and it came up with the error that it was being used by something else and they must be removed first... So I removed ad services and something else that was being used - after a restart it came up with an error saying that the prog. KaZAa could not be run because something was missing. So it must have been some crap that it installed?

The IP like you said was on 169. and I did the renew and it changed to 195!

All good its now up and running fine!

The last thing is to share the files...

This is the details on the pc... http://www.kr8iv.co.uk/pc1.gif I've tried a few different options yet can't seem to figure out the smb:// path?

The Dital F driver is an extra HD in the PC so that might mess things up!

    Thanks for the help,

    dEVS!

    195 mate???

You should be using 192.* internally if you want to use a class C range - 195 is a public address so you could get some problems browsing sites on that subnet...

As for the sharing, try taking the space out the name or just calling it Dital or something, then you could just access it on smb://steve/dital

As for what you'd put on the Mac, make sure you enter workgroup as Office, then just use whatever the username and password are..

I also notice you've got simple file sharing enabled, disable this thru Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, disable Use Simple File Sharing (at the bottom) - then you'll get a proper security dialog box....

"195 mate???" Your right its 192 I just had the number in my head from work

I took a look on the PC and the drive is just called Dital the (F) just gets added later by MS. So I tried connecting to the pc from the mac by going to > Go > Connect to server > Then entered the address smb://STEVE/Dital yet I get an error -36

Where do I enter the workgroup as 'Office' on the mac?

I disabled 'Use Simple File Sharing' thanks for the tip!

    Cheers,

When you've specified the network name on the Mac it should prompt you for the workgroup, user and password details - you just enter the workgroup into the workgroup box..

As for the share, the drive should have already been shared as F$ by Windows - try connecting to this from the mac tp see if this works...

You just need to make sure you specify an administrator on the PC to connect..

Okay this is what I've got on the Mac under network

I can't see anywhere to enter a workgroup name?

    Thx m8,

Right mate, you need to open the connect to dialog - Apple K, fill the smb name in there, then when you select connect it should pop another box up listing workgroup, username and password..

If not you may have remembered an old password or dodgy combo and it's saving it in the password store.....

don;t worry about that mate, just enter smb://steve/f$ in the bottom of that box and press connect...

It's the next box you get that should ask for username / password...

Have you checked the password store?

I noticed that it's not resolving the PC in the dialog - have you got all firewalls disabled on the PC?

Not sure on the error message mate, can you ping the PC from the Mac?

Might be worth trying the smb command using the IP as well.

As for the password store, if you look in the system config there should be a Keychain icon I think - if not check the applications folder - haven't got the mac on so can't check at the minute.

On another note, any chance you can turn auditing on for the XP machine?

Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy, Security Settings, Local Policies, Audit Policy, double click Audit Logon Events, tick success and failure..

Once you've done that you'll be able to see if the Mac is even attempting to connect to the machine and if so you'll be able to see what credentials it's using.
