Default Kazaa not being monitored? Think Again!

Whats this controversy we have all been hearing in the news in the past few months about weather kazaa is being montored by any federal or other piracy agencies. Well think again! Yes, that’s right. If you ever have used Kazaa well here is a good news for you that your IP, host name, isp, and anything you ever downloaded was saved on a log and sent to a agency that is montorig your connection, most likely your isp, in this case it was FastTrack. Now how do you believe me if that is really happening? Well we did a little experiment for outselves to check it out. I downloaded a Motion Picture (Name Removed) from Kazaa lite and then a few days later we get a e-mail from the ISP of the person who performed this test for us, saying how we broke the AUP of the ISP and that we should take matters into our hands.

The company supposibly reported it to our ISP was Universal City Studios Productions LLLP. This is a little bit of information on what they had to say to the ISP.

    Quote:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has come to our attention that <> Services is the service provider for the IP address listed below, from which unauthorized copying and distribution (downloading, uploading, file serving, file "swapping" or other similar activities) of Universal?s motion picture(s) listed below is taking place. We believe that the Internet access of the user engaging in this infringement is provided by <> or a downstream service provider who purchases this connectivity from <>.

That’s a little part of the e-mail that was sent to the ISP from Univsersal Studio’s. When we were first notified about this we were in a little bit of shock our selves too because, we always heard that Kazaa is safe and this is that.

Here is a little part of the rest of the e-mail containing the part where the person’s information was stored that was sent to the ISP.

    Quote:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Title: << REMOVED >>
    Infringement Source: FastTrack
Initial Infringement Timestamp: 18 May 2003 09:48:36 GMT
Recent Infringment Timestamp: 18 May 2003 09:48:36 GMT
    Infringer Username: << REMOVED >>
    Infringing Filename: << REMOVED >>
    Infringing Filesize: 710539264
Infringers IP Address: << REMOVED >>
    Infringers DNS Name: N/A
    Infringing URL: << REMOVED >>

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well there you have it. A little bit of information on how the Kazaa story really works. We are still in the process of trying to talk to the ISP. We will let you know if we have any updates.

Yeah but they are not going to take you to court, all they will do is fire off an automated email to your ISP, which in turn will either automatically fire off a warning email to you, or suspend your account.

Its not exactly a lot of work...

well they'll have difficulty tracing me unless the cut off the entire uni. I download shit loads through it.
It isnt that bad of a program, you just need to know how to look for files to find out which ones are fake

This maybe a stupid question, but does all this apply to Kazaa lite, or is that different?

and whats the ISP going to do? Do they really have the resources to fight it?

I cant see them cutting everyone on that IP list off because that would be pretty much all of their customers LOL

It will apply to Kazaa lite too.
For all intents and purposes, kazaa lite is kazaa.
Its just a modified version without adverts and your sharing quota fiddled and stuff.

Also bare in mind that chances are the same ISP that has sent you a note kindly saying stop has multiple copies of said program/film/album etc sitting on their own news servers and happily dishing it out to their paying customers.

Would be a kettle and pot convention. Easynews charge $10 for 6Gb of access. That's a hell of a lot of "Klingons in Enterprise should look like those in Star-Trek" text to download.

Clara.net offer 40Gb for a tenner per month. Why would you want access to usenet at such a rate? It;s the porn, films, warez and albums it cares.

Stop using Kazza if worried and hit the newsgroups. Safer and quicker.

to be honest i'm not sure whether their are any sites nowadays that are totally safe.

if folks on kazaa are getting emails from their isp then they are obviously being closely monitored by someone.

Ok lets just dip our toe in the sea of reason here for a minute, I'm pretty sure there are a couple of details missing from this "your all doomed" senario.

Yes, that’s right. If you ever have used Kazaa well here is a good news for you that your IP, host name, isp, and anything you ever downloaded was SAVED on a log and sent to an agency that is montorig your connection
Saved on a log file WHERE ?
Agency monitoring MY connection - My connection to who exactly ?

There arent any servers involved its pier to pier so the WHERE is on the computer of the person sharing the file, and the monitoring is just recording who downloads from there shared stuff, you can get lists of IP's owned by the film companies (for example) and get your Pier to pier software to filter them out - obiously its cat and mouse with the IP's changing but it works and it will never be perfect, but the idea it to keep the cost of persusing individuals too high to make it worth while. One free way to reduce file sharing is to release this kind of scare tatics - AGENCYS ARE MONITORING YOU NOW!!! Read it as - there are some shares setup to try and catch you out and it sounds a lot less of a problem - think of them as internet speed cameras and try to avoid them.

    Cheers

then I doubt your intelligence level mate - who excatly are you trying to impress with this statement.
    "I dont care" - I can understand
    but
"they can have a list of my pirate softeware - what are they gonna do about it" - is an empty boast and if you feel that way here is FAST's web address fast@fast.org - go for it.

I cant ever see people getting done for using p2p software like Kazza.

It would simply be to many people to do and the logging information although present would require massive ammounts of data mining and cross referenceing with ISP logs to prove it was you and your pc etc.

ISP's may be forced to block this traffic or the companies running the "HUBS" may get shut down.

Besides people who rely on kazza and the likes are just the highest level of ppl in the warez scene. You never hear newsgroups or IRC channels in the media and if they are serious on cutting down on piracy that where they need to start as this is the starting point of releases.

Anyway - see you guys on irc

Its the Most Downloaded and Most used Program in the world . god there would be no point in taking people to court it would cost to much out of this world figures, so if they want to take every person who has downloaded an Mp3 good luck to them!!.

if they tell your isp and block you get another isp

Isnt it the case that in the US you can get a warrant to search if you suspect copyright theft? (DMCA? Im sure ABDMan can correct me! ) So they can connect up to the network, wait for someone to request from them, track to the a US ISP, etc, etc. You take down a few 1000 people Im sure the service will disapear. (in the US anyway)

I would imagine the MPAA has quite a few 'ADSL' lines with various local ISPs... Also as peer to peer is essentially blind you dont know who is taking software from you... (While this normally is a good thing, for security it does suck quite a bit)

What is needed is something like BitTorrent with trusted sites. So a group of people could share a number of files via bittorrent. If all connections are encrypted then the ISPs cannot shape (detect) the protocol and unwanted people would find it hard to break into...
